About the Author

Jefferson Davis was an American soldier and politician, but is best known for being the only president of the Confederate States of America. Educated as a soldier at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Davis served two tours of military service, first during the Black Hawk War in 1832 and later during the Mexican-American War from 1846-48. Following the Mexican-American War, Davis was appointed to the United States Senate, and later served as secretary of war to President Pierce. Although Davis, as a senator, had argued against secession, he resigned his role in the federal government and returned to his home state of Mississippi following that state s successful succession vote, and was acclaimed president of the Confederate States of America in 1861.

At the end of the American Civil War in 1865, Davis was captured and accused of treason, and his citizenship was revoked. Davis s 1881 memoir, The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government did much to restore his reputation, as did his efforts to encourage reconciliation, however, his citizenship was not restored until 1978. Jefferson Davis died in 1889.

Constitutional issues are explored in depth. This is not a book about the various battles of the Civil War but an in depth analysis of the causes and the philosophy. A must read for the serious historian. Originally this was in several volumes but Kindle has combined all into one. Superb!!!!

Jefferson Davis is one of the enigmas of our history. His epitaph might read something like: "The Failed Leader of the Lost Cause." He is generally portrayed as a crotchety old man of bad temper whose constant feuding with subordinates over petty issues distracted the Confederacy during its fight for life. Sam Houston famously said, "A drop of Jeff Davis' blood would freeze a frog."

And yet the Southern people chose this man above all others to be their President. He seems to have been enormously well respected in the South for his military career in the Mexican War and for his efficient administration of the War Department during Franklin Pierce's administration. As a Senator he was admired for his logic and oratory. Most Southerners who knew him spoke and wrote well of him. Those few who actively despised him were known for stirring up controversies themselves.

No question but that Davis was a complex character. He was no rabid Yankee-hater. He loved every inch of the United States, including the Northern States. Before the war he was one of the few Southerners cheered by Yankee crowds when he spoke in Northern cities like Boston and Portland. He urged patience with the Union at a time when many Southern hotheads were agitating for secession. Yet he also believed in State Sovereignty, the theory that any state had the unquestioned lawful right to leave the Union at any time that a majority of its people decided that the Federal Government no longer suited them. In the end State Sovereignty trumped Davis' unionism. When Davis became convinced that the majority of Mississippians desired to leave the Union he became a leader of the Secessionists.

Despite presiding over a lost war, Davis remained immensely popular in the South until the end of his days. And although many Yankees sung "Hang Jeff Davis from a sour apple tree" there were others like Horace Greely who befriended Davis and offered to pay his legal expenses if the Federal Government put him on trial for treason. He seems to have been remarkably well liked for a "crotchety, self-centered old fogy who lost a war that was fought for the awful cause of destroying the Union and preserving slavery."

Davis' character thus shows many contradictions. I think the best way to resolve these contradictions is to read this book and listen as Davis speaks for himself. Davis was indeed wedded to an archaic belief system of State Sovereignty and Slavery. But his book also makes clear that the cardboard-character image of him as a stubborn and pompous pettifogger and military martinet is also wide of the mark.

I came away with the impression that Jefferson Davis operated upon the principles of selflessness, due consideration for others' opinions, military competence, and fortitude in purpose that might have destined him to be remembered as a great leader --- IF he had led any cause other than the creation of a slave-holding confederation of states. IMO after reading this book my feeling is that a fitting epitaph for Jefferson Davis would be: "A leader of many virtues who was deceived by the current of his times into fighting for archaic ideals."

It was the exact, hard bound collector's edition that I had been looking for unsuccessfully. About 10 years ago I had bought a set while visiting Jefferson Davis' library in Biloxi Miss. I wanted to give a set of them to a friend (a student of the Civil War) for his 60th birthday & could not find the hard bound editions anywhere. I had ordered a paper back set from Amazon, because I couldn't find the one's I wanted, but those editions had a forward in them that I did not like. At the last minute I ordered these, and lo & behold, they were the one's I wanted all along. A very pleasant surprise when there was no time left before his birthday. The books now sit in an honored place in my friends home. A welcome project for him when he retires.

Mermaids, Sculptors, and Debt Collectors

The seventh book in this series is a great example of early sixties paperback originals. It is set in a very loosely disguised Laguna Beach, complete with Pageant of the Masters, artist's studios, cliffs leading down to fabulous beaches, and parties featuring mermaids who appear to be swimming in the punchbowl. It's a fast-moving, quick read that features a woman who wades into the surf as if by compulsion, a bunch of hoods, a sculptor with a tire iron, a gambling wife, a murder, and more.

Dewey gives the reader a well-crafted story that is a lot of fun to read. It has a lot of the classic PI story elements including the merciless hoods, the femme fatale throwing herself at the PI, and all kinds of racing back and forth before the pieces all fall into place. Dewey doesn't try to make this tale anything that it isn't and it works real well. Despite the hoods and the beatngs, it still feels like a lighter PI tale - perhaps it's the beach town partying atmosphere with the endless martinis.

All in all, a fine paperback original.

About the Author

Patrick Dawson is a Professor of Management at the University of Aberdeen. He holds a PhD in industrial sociology from the University of Southampton and during his early career worked at the University of Surrey and the University of Edinburgh. He moved to Australia in the 1980s and took up a position at the University of Adelaide. In studying change in UK, Australian and New Zealand based organizations, Patrick has worked on a number of Australian Research Council (ARC) and Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funded projects in collaboration with scholars at other universities. He has examined change in a number of organizations including: Pirelli Cables, British Rail, General Motors, Hewlett Packard and the CSIRO. Since taking up the Salvesen Chair at Aberdeen he has held visiting professorships at Roskilde University and the Danish Technical University in Denmark, an adjunct professorship at Monash University and a research professorship at the University of Wollongong in Australia.

Literary Heaven Right Here!!

In this book you will find four individual stories about four very delectable men, the first three stories center around the Billionaire Blackwell brothers, and the final story is about Noah Christensen from the Billionaire Club series. Each story contains one very enticing alpha male and the amazing woman who manage to capture their hearts. I enjoyed meeting each and every one of them, and I am quite certain that if you give them the chance they will win you over too!

In The Billionaire Cowboy, you will meet Ryder Blackwell, a rancher who goes to great lengths to win the heart of the woman he loves!! Ryder's smooth one liners, and tough as they come personality completely stole my heart and had me swooning the whole way through!

In the Billion Dollar Player you will meet Jase Blackwell, who just so happens to be a tight end for the Dallas Cowboys Football team. He sets out on a mission to find a little good luck charm for the night, and ends up finding the woman who manages to capture his heart!! Jase was my favorite of the four... just something about a smooth talking football player that melts my heart!!

In Rocked by the Billionaire you will meet handsome rocker Luke Blackwell. Luke returns home for a little rest & relaxation and to possibly win back the heart of his muse, and the girl he walked away from eight years ago. Only she isn't too happy to see him or let him back into her life, so Luke really has to up his game to convince her for a second chance!!

In The Billionaire Sheriff, you meet the final bachelor Sheriff Noah Christensen, who is quite smitten with a local bar owner, but he hasn't quite worked up the nerve to tell her how he feels. For me, this was like hitting the literary jackpot, it doesn't get much better than having, a sexy cowboy, a smooth talking athlete, very persuasive rocker, and handsome protector all in one book!! Definitely literary heaven for me!! Highly recommend you meet these guys, they are sure to satisfy all your reading needs... and then some!!

Each story holds their own!

It's actually four books in one and each one was as exciting as the last! The first three books are about brothers and each story includes a little about the brothers together as a family.
The billionaire cowboy finds Ryder bidding and winning a horse he doesn't really want to get the attention of the local vet named Lara whose he has trying to get to go out with for months. Lara is so darn mad she is spitting when she goes to the ranch to confront Ryder and he makes a deal with her than five she can survive the cattle ranch with him for a weekend he would let her have the horse. Will her heart survive?
The billionaire player focuses on Jason or Jase for short and his infatuation with a waitress at the caterers they use for the team functions and when one of his team members suggests him getting a little he sets his sights on Avery the waitress. Jase can't just hit and quit it because she is so interesting he wants to spend every free moment with her and on top of that his game is improving. Avery thinks that Jase doesn't want to be seen with her in public so when he invites her to a teammates party she goes but is soon sorry.
Rocked by the billionaire Luke a successful rock singer comes back home to the only girl he has ever loved Kayleigh. Kayleigh has tried to rebuild her life after eight years is finally settling, until she sees Luke in town and everything in her life is upside down. When the guy she is seeing Spencer begins to propose she shuts him down and tells him Luke is back in town. Kayleigh doesn't think she can survive Luke again but her heart won't listen, and Luke realizes Kayleigh is all he ever needed.
Billionaire sheriff is the bonus story and even though it doesn't involve the brothers it's a great story of Noah the sheriff in town and he is in love with Naomi the BBQ owner but Noah is shy so when he finally gets the nerve to ask her out he sees a guy roughing her up. Naomi doesn't want Noah to get involved cause she knows she has dealt with some shady characters but he refuses to take no for and answer.
All and all these stories were what dreams were made of and made for a great read.

Disappointing for me and the stories don't line up

Tall, Dark, Billionaire Texan (Billionaire’s Club: Texas #4) This book 3 stars

I will admit that I was a little lost going in because I thought that this was the final book to the Christensen brothers and it was… eventually. This book is actually a series of four small books. The first three were about the Blackwell Brothers and final one was about the last brother in the Christensen Billionaire Series.

The second was The Billions Dollar Player 2.5 – 3 stars. Jase Blackwell was the starting tight end for Dallas Cowboys. He had been given a hard time his entire career because he turned down a scholarship and paid his way through college, or rather his brother paid his way. Now his team has a chance at making it to the Super Bowl and he’s hoping that his nickname of Million Dollar Blackwell will finally go away but he hasn’t been playing his best until he finally talks Avery Lockhart into seeing him. Women normally through themselves at him but she was different. She wanted nothing to do with him which only made him want her more. This book was along the same lines as book one. Previously poor boy, now rich, wanting the girl that doesn’t want him because she believes that he’s too good for her because she’s poor but doesn’t know that he grew dirt poor as well. It’s been done a million times and while I liked certain parts of the story there were also many parts that I didn’t.

Rocked by the Billionaire 2 stars. This one if about Luke Blackwell who is now a highly successful Rock Star that has lost his mojo and hasn’t written a song in close to a year. He’s come home to claim his childhood best friend and former girlfriend Kayleigh Taylor. He left her years ago and never looked back because he was out to prove that he wasn’t just the poor boy that had to wear hand me down clothes his whole life. Kayleigh never saw him that way, she always believed in him and was always there for him but he still left. This book didn’t do it for me at all. I didn’t care for Luke, I tried, I really did but he was arrogant and had that holier than though vibe going on that I just didn’t care for. I also didn’t care a whole lot for Kayleigh. She is supposedly content with her life the way that it is but the moment that Luke rolls into town she drops her boyfriend and runs to Luke’s arms. She came off as flighty and needy, I wouldn’t see this relationship lasting in real life because he’s too much rock start against her small town girl that wants to stay put.

The Billionaire Sherriff 3 stars
This book was what I had thought that I was signing up for to begin with. It’s about Noah Christensen. Noah like HIS brothers did not grow up poor, they grew up very rich, however because their father didn’t want for them to be lazy, he made them work hard and sent them out to make it on their own. Until his father died and left his billions to his four boys. Noah is a small town sheriff and while he doesn’t have to work and everyone in the small town knows it, he works hard every day keeping the town safe. They all look up to him and respect him because of it. He was content with his life and loved what he did but lately he had wanted more and her name was Naomi Davis. She had bought a local restaurant and it was now his favorite place in town to eat. It didn’t hurt that the food was great but the main reason was because he wanted to get to know her better in hopes that he would find the courage to ask her out. On the day does though he finds himself saving her from being attacked and now he can’t shake the feeling that she’s hiding something. Naomi had waited her whole life to get away from her father and the people that he dealt with. Who would have guessed that the only way out was to basically do the same thing that her father had done for years. She’s now working on borrowed time because if she doesn’t come up with her payment soon, she knows that it’s not going to be pretty. This book disappointed me as well. There was a small part at the end that I thought that we would have a reunion of the four brothers but it was squashed pretty quickly. I hate spoilers in reviews but I have to tell you that when Naomi is kidnapped and held for ransom, this part really effected my review because of what happened during it she should not have been fine afterwards and would have needed medical attention. Just saying… If it weren’t for that and the ending, I would have given this one four stars
