Heartwarming Read!!

Architect Derek Walsh normally spends his days designing and constructing modern structures, but when his friends want to employ his services to help restore life into their hundred year old farm house, his desire to restore some historic fine craftsmanship for a change wins out. The other major selling point was the opportunity to work alongside the woman he lost eight years ago. Leaving her and knowing he broke her heart has haunted him for the last eight years, and now he's hoping working on this project together will give him the opportunity to make amends, and possibly help him to find a place in her life again. He knew eight years ago that she was the love of his life, but trying to do the right thing got in the way, and he lost her... this time though he has no intention of letting her get away.

Lindsey Morales has a eye for design, and loves taking old things and giving them new life, so when her friends decide to restore their hundred year old farmhouse, hiring Lindsey seems like a perfect fit. Lindsey is thrilled to have the opportunity to put her talents to good use, and hopes that this job will help her put her little business on the map, and potentially bring in a few more customers too. But when she learns that the contractor they've hired to help her with the project just so happens to be the man that broke her heart eight years ago, she is instantly filled with apprehension. Having him walk away all those years ago was completely devastating for her and she has went to great lengths to avoid any contact with him for fear of being pulled back in and having heart broke all over again. Being this close to him is going to be challenging, but she has heart her guarded and has no plan of the letting the enemy back in...

After reading the synopsis for this story I knew it was going to be good second chance love story that I could really submerse myself into, and I am happy to report that my initial thoughts were spot on, barely a chapter into it, and I was in deep!! Lindsey and Derek's story pulled me in almost immediately and had me flying right through the pages in search of what I hoped to be a very well deserved happy ending, and I have to say that I found that and SO much more!! From the very beginning it was evident that these two were a match made in literary heaven, the chemistry between them burned brightly from start to finish... and also help to create some very steamy encounters that had me blushing and smiling like a fool!!

If you have not had the opportunity to read this series yet, I encourage you you to remedy that very soon!! Not only are you missing out on some truly exceptional reading, but also the opportunity to meet some very charming characters that are certain to cement a permanent place in your heart!!

Good but not Great

Lindsey and Derek encounter each other years after their explosive college romance. While Derek never stopped loving her, he had some tough decisions to make that ended their relationship abruptly. Now, he’ll do anything he can to recapture that spark, including forcing himself in her life as the contractor to her designer while working on a friend’s house. Lindsey never got over the breakup and does everything in her power to avoid Derek at all costs. She just can’t get past the anger and hurt he caused so many years ago… Will this second chance romance allow each to find their happy ending?

Third in a series, Draw Me Close can be read as a standalone novel. It is well-crafted, with an editing grade of A- (which is rare from me). There was enough snark and sass from mostly believable characters to keep my interest. The plot ambled a bit and had more than a few eyerolls with a sarcastic “of course that happened” moments. DMC was a simple read from a good storyteller, but I found myself wondering if I wanted to continue on this journey at a few points. It’s one of those books where I could take it or leave it, and I doubt I’ll be picking up the first two in the series. A few people in my reading circle would thoroughly enjoy the tale, but would take issue with some of the language. It’s not heavily peppered, but of all the times the “f-word” was used, I’d say only once was it really the best word choice.

Overall, I give the book three stars. Again, the good but not great label comes to mind. There was enough to like to make it readable. Unfortunately, there wasn’t enough to make it memorable for me. Most likely a great choice for someone else though.

Truthfully, I'm not really a fan of second-chance romances but I love Nicole Michaels writing and I've loved the other books in this series so I had to read this one. This book right here is how a second-chance romance should be written. Derek made a mistake 8 years ago when he broke up with Lindsey with no explanation. Lindsey is the only woman he's ever loved. Years later, Derek knows Lindsey is the only woman for him and he's willing to do anything to prove to her that she is the one for him. I loved that Lindsey wasn't eager to forgive and really made him work for it. The romance between these two was fantastic. I loved how much Derek loved her - he was so sweet! This was a great conclusion to this series and I'm excited for whatever this author writes next!

Raine has found out she is a blood warrior. Able to kill beings with other world powers. While she is trying to help the pack one of the natives gives her a book and tells her to have the pack translate for her. Knowing full well once they did they wouldn't trust her anymore.
The last 3 books in this series has sadness, action, vampires, and bad guys! What a combo.
It's great I wish I could tell ya more but that would give the book away. So I'll say get it!

I am at a loss after reading this book. ...

I am at a loss after reading this book. The picture the author painted of the horror she endured is nearly impossible to wrap my mind around. Especially in a small town, right under people's noses. It makes me want to scream and rail at the injustice of it all. The fact that she was able to show real, true forgiveness just proves the point of the Cross and Jesus' ultimate sacrifice. It truly is through God and Him only that this kind of forgiveness is even possible. Lord, help me to show this kind of forgiveness to people in my own life. I pray this book will make it into the hands of people who so desperately need the message it sends.

a friend recommended I read Forgiveness Unforgettable

Knowing that I have heart for helping hurting adults and children, a friend recommended I read Forgiveness Unforgettable.

First of all, one of the things that is so miraculous about this story is the fact that the author “lived to tell it.” I sat spell-bound reading each chapter, as she tells the horrifying events of her life growing up with an alcoholic, abusive father. Her writing style drew me right to the scene of the action taking place. Using vivid descriptions of the events, plus recalling dialogue family members had with one another as each violent episode unfolded, left me experiencing many emotions of my own. I was literally trying to grasp the reality of what I was reading.

It is, indeed, a story of survival, but also a story of compassion offered to the one who inflicted so much pain on his family. Think about it. “Would you put a blanket over someone who passed out in a drunken rage right after he had tried to kill his family?” Nikki Brannon did, and that is just one of the many gestures of compassion shown to this man.

How could she have so much compassion and forgiveness in her heart while on a roller coaster of emotions that ranged from “Love, hate, love, hate?”

In Nikki’s own words from the book, she explains it well:

“What love the Lord has for each one of us even for those who don’t deserve His love. I am satisfied in knowing I was used through the trials to grow and learn to forgive before it was too late. He (my father) didn’t deserve my love, compassion, sacrifice, and forgiveness. I didn’t deserve to have a Savior lay down His life for ME so that I could have everlasting life. I completely forgave, and I’m forgiven.”
Today, she tells of walking in freedom, spreading her love for Jesus as an accomplished musician singing to thousands upon thousands in small churches, plus on a national stage.

The next time I want to help someone hurting, I will just hand them a copy of this book. It is a must read for those struggling to overcome any type of painful situation in their lives.

The Hero is Awesome

Claire Shelton and Tanner Hayes were young and in love. Unfortunately, when we are young, sometimes we don’t always make the best choices. When Claire made Tanner choose between her and the rodeo, she never expected that he would choose the rodeo. At that point, neither really understood the other’s point of view.

Now, Tanner has come back home to, at the request of Claire’s father, help out at the ranch while he recuperates. Claire is now a widow and single mother, one with a secret that she has held ever since Tanner left her. With the risk of her secret being found out growing every day, Claire tries to find ways to get Tanner to leave.

Tanner, too, has matured a lot in his time away and is determined to make things right with Claire and hopefully earn a second chance for them to find a future together. When the secret comes to light, Tanner ends up responding beautifully. I think that he is my favorite hero of any Karen Rock book that I have read.

This book had great, developed characters with a storyline that will keep you turning the pages. This book is an easy recommendation for me.

Starts with a tear-jerker of a prologue

“His Kind of Cowgirl” by Karen Rock starts with a tear-jerker of a prologue that grabbed my emotions and entangled me in the lives of Claire and her adorable son as they learn to deal with multiple challenges. Then I struggled to form a connection to Tanner after that impactful opening and learning of the past history between them and unresolved issues that made Claire’s distrust understandable but frustrating. Things piled on until I was almost suffocating under the burdens that all of them were struggling with and frustrated at the lack of transparency and reluctance to be honest with each other. I am impressed that the author was able to create such realistic characters and invest me in their lives so much that I found myself fussing at them, but I was relieved that things eventually work out, even if it wasn't quite as smoothly as I would have liked. This was an intriguing perspective on the challenges of a condition such as ADHD and its impact on lives and the importance of finding a way to cope. Kudos to the author for sharing both her story and Tanner and Jonathan’s challenges.

This contemporary romance with a western twist follows Claire Shelton as she meets and overcomes the blows that life hands her, including widowhood, a father incapacitated by a stroke, and the threat of losing the family ranch. Having bullrider Tanner Hayes forced back into her life adds to her stress, and the secrets swirling around them only complicate matters even further. Tanner is destined to walk out Claire’s life again, but this time she refuses to let it destroy her and her family. The problem is that her goals may be worlds apart from what Tanner is determined to achieve.

Second chance romance? Yes, please!

His Kind of Cowgirl is a very sweet second chance romance/secret baby story. It had some frustrating moments and at least one scene that felt fairly forced, but overall I really enjoyed this story. Plus--we've got a widow who found love again (or is it still?) without having to find out some horrible truth about her first husband that negates all their years of happiness--whoo hooo! Thank you, Karen Rock :)

Ultimately, I liked both Claire and Tanner. Claire made it a bit tough at times--her past experiences have made her cautious, and she isn't willing to give Tanner even a millimeter of a chance at first. She's sure she knows what's right--for her father, for the ranch, and for her son--and she doesn't even want to entertain any other ideas. Especially if they come from the ex that chose the rodeo over her ten years before. I got where she was coming from, and though I didn't always agree with her, I understood why she was thinking and doing the things she did. What drove me crazy, though, was how gosh darn long it took her to tell Tanner the truth--and the whole time, she knew it was wrong to have waited so long, which made it doubly frustrating.

Tanner was an awesome hero--confident, great with kids, supportive of Claire when she needed it most--though he too had his own issues to work through. His biggest one was needing to figure out who he could be if he wasn't a big rodeo star anymore. In the beginning of the book, he couldn't see himself living any other life and was practically counting the days until he could go back. He originally comes to the ranch to help himself, but ends up staying to help others...and finding more than he ever imagined was possible in the process.

Jonathan, their son, was all kinds of adorable. He and his grandfather (Claire's dad) actually had my favorite quote from the book:

"I'm good at being annoying. It's one of my superpowers" (Jonathan)

"Never works on me. Always like having you around. Guess that means I'm your kryptonite." (Martin)

All kinds of adorbs right there!

So, yeah... I liked this one. Doesn't mean I didn't want to sit various characters down at times for a talkin' to, but in the end it left me with warm, feel-good fuzzies and a smile on my face.

It felt weird being in an interrogation room out of uniform. Not that thirty-two-year-old Chantel Harris spent much time interrogating suspects. She was a street cop, not a detective. But in the twelve years she'd been a cop, she'd been called in to sit with suspects on occasion and to help with questioning a time or two.

Even worse than being out of uniform was entering the room on stiletto heels, with makeup on her face and with her blond hair, which usually lived in a ponytail, cascading down her back in artfully curled waves.

"Excuse me, miss, but… Chantel?"

She almost turned and walked right back out as Detective Wayne Stanton—a friend from academy days—whooped. And grinned.

"Impressive, Wayne," Chantel said, trying not to become too fond of the way the silk lining of her pants slid along her legs as she sat. Cops couldn't afford Italian-made silk-lined clothes. Shrugging out of the matching slate blue jacket, she drummed her blunt-cut fingernails on the table. "Let's get through this."

"Actually, you're the impressive one," Captain Reagan said, coming in behind her and closing the door. "You clean up nice, Harris."

"Thank you, sir." The undercover assignment had been her idea. Hers and Wayne's. She had no doubts about her ability to do the job. Or her desire to catch the rich scumbag who thought his money and power gave him the right to knock his wife around.

"I might make one suggestion, though." The captain was holding back a smile. "What's that, sir?"

"Before you go to the fundraiser tonight, stop off at one of those walk-in nail salons—I believe there's one on the corner of Dunbar and First. Get yourself some acrylic nails. No rich society woman's going to show up with fingers that look ready and able to pull a trigger."

He had a point. "Yes, sir."

"The money you received was enough to buy you the clothes and things you need to see you through a six-week stint?"

Six weeks had been the operation's initial approval window. Chantel hoped she could either get proof in that time or enough evidence to warrant an extension on the assignment.

"Yes, sir. I found a secondhand shop in LA that sells highend designer clothes."

"So just to be clear—" the captain looked at her and Wayne "—you'll work your regular tour, with pay. For this operation you have your project budget, but your time spent is on a volunteer basis."

"Yes, sir."

"Yes, sir," Wayne echoed. While the detective wouldn't be undercover, he was not only going to be the person to whom she reported, but he would also be doing follow-up, including information dissemination.

The captain shook his head. "You're both really committed to this High Risk team."

"Yes, sir," they said in unison. By bringing together members from all professions that came in contact with victims of domestic violence, creating an information pool that ensured that doctors and schools and legal aid and child protective services were all on the same page, the team was preventing domestic-violence deaths. Chantel had seen firsthand evidence…

The captain sat back. "You know, when I first read the memo on this team, I thought the folks in charge were nuts."

Chantel's jaw tightened as she bit back the ready defense that sprang to her lips.

"But I have to admit…domestic violence statistics, even here in Santa Raquel, are down remarkably."

She relaxed.

"And you." He nodded toward Chantel. "You know better than most."

"Yes, sir."

She'd first visited Santa Raquel from San Diego two years before, as a favor to a friend who believed his wife had been taken by her abusive ex-husband. Wayne, who'd been a member of the Santa Raquel police force, had helped her—also on his own time—and they'd saved a woman's life.

As far as anyone knew, it had been Chantel's first personal experience with domestic violence. And while she'd always known that what had happened with her stepfather had been a crime, she'd only in the past months begun to realize just how hideous his treatment of her had been. Helping Max and Meri Bennet had changed her in a lot of ways. Not only in how she viewed love. Through them she'd found her calling, found a way to put her own past to good use. To make lemonade out of her lemons. She was meant to help other women who, though they may have the strength of Hercules, couldn't always fight their battles on their own. The captain seemed to have dismissed them, but he was still sitting there. And until he stood, she couldn't. "I just have one question…"

"Yes, sir?" Wayne answered for the two of them.

"This collage thing… You don't think this is overkill? The department's money, going undercover, working your ass off for no compensation because some kid pasted pictures on a board during art class?"

"The boy's father has a sealed juvenile record, sir," Wayne said, immediately pointing out the information they'd found when they'd started asking questions about the wealthy, respected and well-known Morrison family, who lived just a few miles from them in nearby Santa Barbara.

"I understand. He hit his younger brother with a baseball bat."

"The boy died."

"That was more than forty years ago. Plus, as we've already said, the record was sealed."

"Hospital records show that Mrs. Morrison is accident-prone." Wayne was all business as, in his suit and tie—daily attire for him now—he sat forward, facing the captain.

"I understand. She's not the only woman who appears to suffer from the malady. Believe me, I want domestic violence to stop. I don't want anyone to suffer abuse at the hands of loved ones. I'm just trying to understand, between you and me, why we're going to all this trouble because of a collage."

Wayne looked at her, and Chantel found her tongue.

"The artist who works in the schools doing collages with students, Talia Paulson, volunteers at The Lemonade Stand, sir. She has now had formal training in domestic violence counseling. She works with all students, but part of her purpose is to read the collages, as a way to pinpoint problems students might be having that the adults in their lives are either unaware of or not tending to.

"Anger issues, self-concept issues, grief. It all comes out not only in the photos these kids choose, but in organization and color expression, too."

She had Captain Reagan's full attention now. And though she felt like a bug under his microscope, she respected the man and needed his buy-in.

Not to do the job. The project was already approved. But for her own sense of…she didn't know what.

"Ryder Morrison is a straight-A student in a well-touted private school. He also used to be a star swimmer and was damned good at surfing, too. In the past year, he's become withdrawn. Never wanting to leave home, or seemingly leave his mother's side. Talia was called in. What she saw in Ryder's collage alarmed her to the point that she called the High Risk team immediately."

"I read the report," Reagan said. "What was in the collage? That's what I'm asking."

"Baseball bats. A series of them, hidden among a collection of surfboards, sticking out of the leg of a pair of swim trunks, as a tattoo on a businessman's arm. The bats were all small, and all black. The other thing that stood out was a collection of ads—all women selling house-cleaning supplies like furniture polish and floor wax. They also were spread throughout the other clear interest groupings. All of those were rimmed in red and purple. Colors that typically signify love and blood. Bruising. There were other things, but those were the most standout. Talia was alarmed and called us. Wayne checked it out and found not only that Mrs. Morrison was prone to being hurt—bruised—but that Mr. Morrison had had an episode with a baseball bat."

"Did anyone think about asking the kid about any of this?" Reagan asked. "I didn't see anything about it in the report."

"His parents refused to let him speak with us," Wayne dutifully reported.

Chantel looked at Captain Reagan and made a split-second decision to trust him. He was a powerful man in the small police force. She wanted to know they had him on their side.

"Talia spoke with Ryder," she said. "He told her that he'd overheard something, but that when he'd asked his mother about it she'd told him he'd misunderstood. We don't know what he was referring to. But that had been his reply when Talia had asked him about the significance of the baseball bats. He said they were black to represent misunderstanding."

"A bit deep for an eleven-year-old."

"Kids who are forced to grow up quickly tend to be that way." Chantel knew.

Reagan frowned. "So you think what this kid overheard was something about his father killing his little brother?"

Wayne's head tilted a bit as he said, "Stands to reason. It's pretty clear that whether it's something he overheard, or something going on in his home, Ryder has had a complete personality change in the past year and neither of his parents are acknowledging it."

Chantel added, "They say his behavior changes are no more than a phase, due to his burgeoning adolescence. And because there are no signs of physical abuse against him, no sign that he's being mistreated at all, there's no more we can do to gain entrance through a front-door approach."

"That family is in danger, sir," Wayne told him. "The boy is clearly afraid."

"I'm willing to work triple shifts without pay if need be to prevent Mr. Morrison from hurting his son. I wouldn't be able to live with myself if Ryder ended up hurt or, God forbid, dead because we did nothing."

"Not to mention Mrs. Morrison," Wayne added. "Her life is clearly even more in the balance than her son's since she's already exhibiting signs of having been abused. According to hospital records, she's had a broken arm, a broken collarbone, multiple contusions on the back of her head and ribs broken in her back. Those are the injuries she sought medical help for. We have no idea how many others there have been. As you saw in the report, we've had three doctor notifications of suspected abuse over the past several years, but each time, both parties deny any wrongdoing. It's clear she's not going to press charges. Or even stand up for her son. She won't let him talk to us."

While it was true that Leslie Morrison had refused police access to her son, Chantel wasn't as certain as Wayne that the woman wouldn't stand up for him. She believed it was more a case of the woman keeping her son safe by covering for her husband—and taking his abuse herself.

Reagan shook his head, picking up his folder. "So, she won't press charges against the bastard."

The statement hung there between the three of them. Questions choking them with their lack of answers.

Until it became clear that the only way any of them were going to find the peace they sought was by getting back to work.

"You be careful out there," Reagan said to Chantel as she walked down the hall of the station like she'd been born in fashionable heels. She'd been practicing in her apartment all week.

"I will, sir."

"This man, if he's guilty of all that we suspect—he's dangerous."

"I know, sir. Which is why we need a cop in there keeping an eye on things. Don't worry. I'll have my gun with me at all times."

He nodded as he left them. Then it was just her and Wayne, standing by the back door.

"You got me on speed dial?" he asked.

"Of course."

"Then go get them, Chantel. You're born to do this job. If anyone can pull it off, you can." She hoped so.

Going against bad guys didn't give her pause. Drug dealers. Thieves. Rapists. She was trained to take them down.

But act all girlie and glamorous? A woman who could laugh in all the right places and move like she wanted every man in the place to look at her?

That wasn't her style at all.

A Good, solid story

This was a more event based story, than emotional one. Even though the issues of the book are serious, from domestic abuse to date rape, and police cover up for criminals and crimes, it wasn't an overly emotional tale.
Chantel has passion for her job, she is giving everything she has, her time, energy, and resources, to catch the criminals. Now going undercover, for the first time, she feels a little out of her depth, but is determined to make it work, and get the job done. She has seen a lot during her life, even a couple people falling in love, but trusting someone so completely, to surrender to your emotions that way, wasn't something Chantel planned to do herself. Ever.
Colin, the rich rainmaker lawyer, running his family's legacy, the law firm, and looking after his sister, are all he lives for. The occasional dating, and charity work withstanding, he is all about making deals, and getting new clients. And protect his sister, no matter what. To trust someone, that is asking too much, to fall in love, not for him.
So when these two meet, while Chantel is undercover, sparks fly, and a connection is made, that takes them both by surprise. They fumble around each other, not sure what is happening, and soon they can't help but fall for each other. But will they have a future, since everything they are building in between themselves is based on lies and deceit?
Looking for evidence for domestic violence, Chantel runs into much bigger case she, and her team, ever imagined. The antics they go into, to catch the perpetrator, with evidence and witnesses, puts lives in danger, and Chantel into a situation she promised herself, she would never be in.
The story is engaging, it is curious how Chantel lives on the edge of her true personality, and her undercover image, how she deals with the high society, the glamour and finesse of the pretend world she is in.
I like the characters, the supporting cast gave a lot to the plot. There's constant referrals to the past events, several times the same events from the past are told, that have nothing to do with this story. To tell once, to show character development, is perfect, no need to repeat.
With unexpected events towards the end, the story takes a surprise ending, making it gratifying and fulfilling ending for all.

Another outstanding Lemonade Stand that examines violence against women

Take an experienced police woman who goes undercover, a young woman whose wealthy family didn't protect her from being savagely raped by the son of a family friend, and the woman's handsome brother who runs the family law firm. Why does Chantel go undercover? To gather evidence against a man thought to be beating his wife and placing their young son in danger. Complicating the issue is her realization that Julie's rape may be related to the other crime, too.

Does she succeed? I won't tell, but suffice it to say that how Chantel begins gathering information requires that she also become friends with Colin, Julie's brother. Trouble is, he falls for her in spite of his long-held belief that he can trust no one, least of all beautiful women. Making matters worse, or at least more interesting, Chantel begins to fall for him, too, even though she's on the job and she's never allowed herself to get close, much less enjoy a real relationship with a victim or victim's family member.

Chantel's plan to catch the rapist is both clever and potentially deadly. After all, she'll have no back-up. How it all ends resolves in a way both unexpected and deeply satisfying--for all parties involved.

Another Lemonade Stand Book

This is a book about abuse sexual and domestic violence and trust. Chantel is a cop who goes under cover, Colin is a lawyer and a brother , Julie is the younger sister. Julie was raped when she was younger. Colin has issues with trust .Colin is trying to keep his sister safe from the talk of the town. Chantel discovers corruption and cover up that is protecting some of the wealthy and corruption in the police. Who can she trust and will her and Colin weather the trust issue . You will have to read to find out.
