Her best bet is to stay away

Was Olivia hearing this right? The one man in Indian Lake she'd found truly intriguing since, well, forever—the hopelessly handsome heir to the region's most successful farming operation, Rafe Barzonni—was involved in horse racing? That made him, and her sudden attraction, downright dangerous. He wasn't just out of her league. He was a gambler. Like her father. With the shame of her father's racetrack betting addiction still haunting her, Olivia can't be part of that world. Rafe's world. She can't trust him, or his magnetism. But there's something deep in his incredible blue eyes that keeps drawing her closer…

The early-spring dew glistened as dawn struck the lush grass of the Barzonni training paddock. The only disturbance in the chilly air was the heavy snort, rhythmic breathing and thundering hooves of Rowan as Rafe urged his father's prize Thoroughbred around the second quarter mile of track.

Rafe was far from a professional jockey, and at six foot one, he'd never aspired to the career, but no one knew Rowan's talent, spirit and desire to run like Rafe did. Every beat of Rowan's heart matched his own. Blood pulsed through his veins, suffusing his body and mind with oxygen, and Rafe's lungs filled and exhaled the crisp, clean morning air like an elixir. His exhilaration grew as the horse sped up, and Rafe leaned his head closer to Rowan's neck, shouting encouragement. He knew Rowan sensed his pride, his own need to push them both to their physical limits. No run was a test or trial. Each one was the end game. It was for the win.

At moments like this, Rafe and the horse were one, moving fluidly through space and time, gobbling up track as if they weren't part of the real world. Together they were magic.

They were coming up to the third turn, so Rafe pressed his thighs into Rowan's sides and dug in his heels just enough to communicate it was time for Rowan to unleash all his power.

Rafe and his father had built their home track together, board by board, truckload after truckload of precisely mixed sandy loam, clay and base soil when Rafe was only fourteen. Angelo had always dreamed of owning a Kentucky Derby winner, so they'd fine-tuned their track to the exact specifications of Churchill Downs in Louisville. And no ordinary racehorse would do. Angelo wanted fame, but not necessarily fortune—though his farm had yielded a fairly large one over the years. His four sons were his legacy, but a moment in the winner's circle would erase all his beleaguered childhood experiences, or so he'd told Rafe. Rafe never once forgot what he was racing for.

Rafe's father had come to America after living most of his young life on the streets in Sicily. Angelo had told the boys he worked hard because he never wanted anyone to take his land from him. As long as he tilled the earth and watched vegetables grow, he knew he'd never have to scrounge through garbage for a meal. Some townspeople said Angelo was a thief, that he'd stolen bankrupt farms from their neighbors over forty years ago. But Rafe never believed his father had done anything wrong.

The fact was that Angelo was a driven man. His need to control his future and that of his sons overrode everything else in his life. Angelo was not demonstrative or thoughtful. He didn't often tell his sons or his wife that he loved them. Instead, he toiled from dawn till long past dusk to keep the farm solvent. His hard work had made him wealthy over the years, but Angelo never saw it that way. He was always one failed crop away from destitution. He taught his sons to keep their sights on the abundance that came from the earth.

Angelo was also a man of contradictions. Though he loved horses, he never bet on a race in his life. To him, gambling was the same as burning money. A waste. But the thrill of being victorious at a race, the prestige that came from owning a winner and the possibility that his name would be attached to a horse that made history was Angelo's dream. And he didn't believe in half measures. When he realized Rafe shared his love for horses, Angelo did everything he could to encourage Rafe's passion and involvement in the sport.

Rafe had raced over a dozen Thoroughbreds around this track, but no horse had ever measured up to Rowan. He was the son of a Preakness-winning sire and a mare that had won over a million dollars at Santa Anita, Arlington and other tracks in her lifetime. Rowan had been born to race, and Rafe believed that with the help of their trainer, Curt Wheeling, they were finally about to triumph.

As Rafe and Rowan headed down the final stretch, Rafe tried to imagine what it would be like to be the jockey on Rowan's back during a professional race. Thousands of spectators would be watching him, critiquing his skills, the nuances of the tugs he gave the reins, the directions he shouted into Rowan's ears and the lean of his body in the saddle. They would cheer and yell for him, and his boyhood dreams would become reality.

The sound of Rowan's hooves as they pounded the dirt filled Rafe's ears. In the distance he could hear his father's voice rolling toward him like an oncoming storm.

"Push him out, Rafe! Put your knees into him!" Angelo shouted. Rafe could see his father out of the corner of his eye, holding his stopwatch at eye level, and he smiled to himself. Angelo never let that stopwatch drift a quarter inch out of his sight, always fearful he'd miss a split second of vital clocking.

Curt Wheeling pulled off his ever-present cowboy hat and smacked it against the white fence. His thick salt-and-pepper hair sprang into a half-dozen spiky cowlicks. "Let him free, Rafe! Let him take you to the limit!"

Curt also held a stopwatch, the one his father had given him fifty years ago on his sixth birthday. Curt had come from a long line of horse trainers, and the Barzonnis were lucky to have hired him. Curt had been let go from his last job in Texas because the owner wanted a younger man. Since coming to Indian Lake, Curt had fit right in and had bonded with Rowan just as Rafe had.

Rafe heard their instructions and leaned his chest against Rowan's withers, keeping his head low to reduce wind resistance. When he got this close to the finish line, Rafe always wondered how many seconds faster Rowan would be with a jockey who was sixty pounds lighter and nearly a foot shorter. At the same time, this ride was so thrilling that Rafe couldn't—wouldn't—dream of relinquishing the track to anyone else. Angelo always said that if Rowan could run with a lanky, hard body like Rafe's in the saddle, he could race to the stars with a professional jockey. Training Rowan with an anvil on his back was good for the horse, his father had said.

"C'mon, boy! This is it! Now—fly!"

That was all Rafe had to say. Rowan's strong legs beat out a rhythm that Rafe had never heard from any horse before. His hooves hit the ground and carried them so fast over the finish line that Rafe wasn't quite so sure the horse hadn't sprouted wings and left the earth.

Then something happened that Rafe had never experienced with his horse. He kept going. With each stride, he moved even faster.

Instead of pulling him back, Rafe let him run. And run he did. Rafe felt as if he was shooting through space. The air stung his eyes and he admonished himself for not wearing goggles, but he couldn't have anticipated this. Last week Rafe had pushed Rowan to nearly thirty-eight miles an hour, but today he knew they were moving much faster. Most Thoroughbreds' stride was twenty feet, but Rowan's was twenty-six. He was a highly unusual horse, and it was becoming more apparent to them all that this year Rowan was about to meet his destiny.

But what confused Rafe was the fact that Rowan had never displayed this kind of power before. Why had he held so much back?

They were nearly halfway around the track before Rowan's speed diminished even a millisecond. The horse was breathing so hard, it sounded as if his lungs would explode, though Rafe knew well that Thoroughbreds had exceptionally efficient cardiovascular systems. Breathing through his nose, Rowan drew in air when he extended his long legs, and he exhaled when his legs came together.

Finally, without any instruction from Rafe, Rowan slowed, turned around and galloped back to the fence gate where Angelo and Curt were clapping and grinning at them.

"That was unbelievable, son!" Angelo shouted with both arms raised jubilantly over his head, his stopwatch still in his right hand.

Curt opened the gate so Angelo could walk through and hug his son.

Rafe jumped down and wrapped his father in a tight bear hug. "Did you see that? Amazing! There aren't enough words." Rafe unfurled his arms from around his father and threw them around his horse's neck.

Rowan stamped a hoof and bobbed his head as if he was taking his rightful accolades. "Way to go, boy! You are the best. The best!"

Angelo hugged Rowan, as well. "I knew this was a special horse the first day we saw him in Tennessee." Angelo held the reins and stared into Rowan's deep brown eyes. "He has soul, Rafe. You remember that. This is no ordinary horse. He deserves your time."

"Time." Rafe snorted. "It's spring. Just when I should be helping Curt train him, we're working twenty hours a day to get the tilling and planting done. If only Gabe were here."

"He's not," Angelo ground out. Gabe's marriage to Liz Crenshaw was a sore subject with Rafe's father. Angelo believed the marriage was an excuse for his eldest son's defection, but Rafe understood Gabe's need to have a career of his own.

Rafe, on the other hand, couldn't imagine a more perfect life than what he had here on the farm. Though the work was backbreaking and exhausting at times, he couldn't conceive of any other way to live. And it was worth it for the horses, which had been part of the farm since before Rafe was born. Though Angelo hadn't begun purchasing Thoroughbreds until Rafe was in his teens, Rafe couldn't remember a time he wasn't riding. Gabe and Mica were enamored of sports cars, and though Rafe appreciated their passions, animals occupied that special place in Rafe's heart.

Over the years, Rafe had gained every bit of knowledge and expertise he could about Thoroughbreds. Until Curt Wheeling came along, Rafe and his father had not seriously considered entering races to win a purse. The horses they'd been able to afford weren't "star" material. But Rafe understood his father's strategy to keep buying horses and trading them "up" until he was able to afford a quality racehorse.

When they'd driven to Tennessee to see Rowan, the owner wasn't much interested in the young colt who took up space in his stable and time with his trainers because he already had an entrant in the Kentucky Derby.

But though Rowan was only a year old when Rafe met him, he would never forget the way the horse seemed to sense his presence. Rowan had been grazing in a grassy paddock with his mother. The owner had pointed him out to Rafe, and while Angelo and the owner talked, Rafe had wandered over to the fence to take a closer look.

Rafe was still yards away from the fence when suddenly, Rowan lifted his head from the grass and looked directly at him. There was no fear in Rowan's eyes as he turned away from his mother's side and strode slowly toward Rafe.

Rafe reached the fence at the same moment as Rowan, and when he reached out to touch his snout, Rowan eased his head under Rafe's hand. Then the horse curved his neck around Rafe's shoulders, as if he was hugging him.

Rafe got chills. "You'll be coming home with me," Rafe had whispered. "I'll care for you all my life."

Rafe put his arms around Rowan. Then he kissed him just as his father and the owner walked up. Rafe was shocked at the lump in his throat. He'd barely known this horse and yet he felt he'd known him forever.

He remembered the compassion and understanding in his father's eyes as Angelo considered the purchase. His long pause filled Rafe with dread that the owner was asking too much for Rowan and that Rafe's strong reaction might have negated the sale. "Is he the one, son?"

Knowing that his father was a shrewd businessman, Rafe tamped down his emotions and found his voice. "I need to ride him, Pops. See what he can do before we decide."

Angelo remained stoic and nodded as he turned to the owner. "That all right with you?"

The owner agreed and signaled to his trainer to saddle Rowan. Then he explained that Rowan needed training. He could run, but he wasn't making any promises. Angelo and Rafe would have to provide substantial instruction.

Rafe put Rowan through a few paces on the training track, but it only took one turn for Rafe to realize the potential that the Thoroughbred packed.

Angelo made the deal. Neither of them ever looked back on the drive home to Indiana.

Rafe returned to the present and looked at his father. "Dad, remember when I rode Rowan for the first time?"

"Never forget it," Angelo replied, folding his arms across his chest.

"Well, something happened out there on the track today. You saw it." He glanced at Curt, who was giving him a wary expression. "Hear me out. All this time, we've been racing Rowan on a track like Churchill Downs. That's adequate for places like Arlington and such, but I think it's too short for him."

"What are you saying?" Angelo asked.

"I think he's a Preaknesstype runner. That race is a mile and three-sixteenths, not just the mile like the Kentucky Derby. Rowan didn't hit his stride until we passed the finish line. I want to take him on another round right now and see what he can do. He should be tired out, but he isn't. And to keep him running these shorter races is a disservice to his talent."

Curt scratched his head. "How could we have missed this?"

Rafe put his hand on Curt's shoulder. "How could we have known? It was a brutal winter. He hasn't had a chance to let it rip for months. Two weeks ago he was running through muck and mud. This is the first time the track's been in decent shape this season."

"Logical," Angelo said with an odd grimace. "Listen, you take him out. I'm tired. I'm going up to the house…to see if breakfast is ready." He hugged himself again.

"But, Dad, you gotta see this. You have the best eye ever."

"Oh." Angelo stared at the ground. "All right," he said quietly.

Rafe couldn't understand why his father wasn't sharing his enthusiasm, but he wouldn't let Angelo's attitude get to him. "Excellent!" Rafe smiled broadly and slung himself up onto Rowan's back. He pulled on the reins and turned the horse around.

Rafe and Rowan waited at the starting line while Angelo leaned against the fence and held his stopwatch. Curt did the same. As usual, Curt held up the red bandanna he used to signal the start of the trial, which was easy for Rafe to see.

Curt dropped the bandanna, and Rowan shot ahead. Rafe could tell that Rowan had made the first turn in a shorter time than the first trial. The second turn breezed by. So did the third. Coming up to the finish, Rafe glanced over at his father and Curt as he always did. Curt was screaming something at Rafe, though he couldn't make out the words. Angelo still held his stopwatch at eye level, but he was not cheering or shouting like Rafe thought he would be. He'd expected his father to be bursting with enthusiasm; instead, he appeared to be watching with a very steady gaze.

Rafe glowed with pride as he leaned forward and pushed Rowan to cross the finish line and not stop. Rowan poured on the power and left the finish line far behind him. They were around the first turn before the horse's stride slowed.

Rafe's suspicions were confirmed. They hadn't begun to tap Rowan's power and abilities. As Rafe slowed the horse, his mind filled with visions of great races, superb wins…and making history. Rafe was nearly euphoric as they galloped back toward the gate.

Instantly, his smile melted off his face. Angelo was lying on the ground, and Curt was still yelling at him. Rafe couldn't make out the words over the pounding of his heart. He urged Rowan to the gate and jumped off.

"What's wrong?" Rafe shouted as he opened the gate and stooped over his father.

"I called 911 from my cell," Curt said. "He clutched his chest and sank to the ground just as you passed the finish line. There was no way you could hear or even see me then."

Angelo's eyes were closed, his face a ghastly, frightening gray.

a great romantic escape!
By MeezCarrie
3.5 stars

Fear of Falling by Catherine Lanigan takes readers on a journey through heartache, fear, defeat, romance, and even a little triumph along the way. Characters are the heart of the novel, even the four-legged kind, and you will be drawn to their stories and their community. Intriguing peeks into the intricacies of horse racing segue into scenes that will leave you waiting for the outcome with bated breath. You won’t watch the Kentucky Derby the same way again! While a couple aspects of the plot didn't quite make sense to me, if you like a clean, sweet romance that still simmers with passion, this is a great choice to add to your TBR list!

(I received a complimentary copy of this book.)

Catherine Lanigan once again takes us away with this wonderfully sumptuous summer’s read

Catherine Lanigan once again takes us away with this wonderfully sumptuous summer’s read! If you want to drift away into a world of artistic talent, the thrill of horse racing and unrequited love in a small town, this book is for you!!! Even though Oliva and Rafe had casually met in the past, their love is not realized until a chance meeting in the wake of a heartrending family tragedy. Ms. Lanigan further leaves us puzzled as to a beloved character Mrs. Beabots—personally I’m anxiously awaiting to discover her mysterious past.

Solid 4 Star Sweet Romance!
By Kristin Ravelle
A Harlequin is a bit of a departure for the reviews I do on my blog but I had the opportunity recently to read the next book in Catherine Lanigan’s Shores of Indian Lake series. These are part of Harlequin’s Heartwarming imprint (clean romances with strong family and community values).

I’ve read some Harlequin books in the past but wanted to read a new title from this company that’s been around since 1949! Catherine Lanigan is a best-selling romance author with nearly 40 books published so I’m grateful to receive a Harlequin from a long-time pro!

Olivia is a caterer whose father’s bad horse betting habit traumatized her childhood. Now she’s really attracted to Rafe, the owner, breeder, and to-be racer of a thoroughbred horse (Rowan), her very antithesis. Rafe is dealing with intense family grief so both characters are coping with difficult emotional stuff at the outset.

All the characters are very intertwined in each other’s lives as Indian Lake is a small community. It’s nice to feel the closeness and supportiveness of the entire community though in reality I’m not sure this would pan out so well. The author brings us through the emotional issues step by step and develops Olivia’s and Rafe’s relationship gradually and naturally, interlaced with local life. Love the food!

The writing style is largely expository or telling (vs showing) with lots of past tense “had” done somethings, and “__ed’s”. In one way it’s great to get all the story fill in, but I prefer more dynamic writing styles where the story fill in comes through an event or dialogue, or even told in first person as many NA/YA books now do. And Olivia is a bit of a wonder as despite her childhood trauma, she rows, is a good tennis player, a photographer, and helps her mom run a deli (feeling very under-achiever-ish here!).

That said, there are lots of good feels, and a unique story line, all well hashed out. Ultimately, both Olivia and Rafe consciously decide what they want most in their lives.

If you enjoy reading sweet romances, I highly recommend Fear of Falling. Me, I’m in love with the fabulous Rowan… Solid 4.0 Stars!

My thanks to the author’s publicist and Bostick Communications for a free copy for the purposes of an unbiased review. My review originally appeared at my blog:

From Book 1: Damen is a warrior hero to his people, and the rightful heir to the throne of Akielos, but when his half brother seizes power, Damen is captured, stripped of his identity, and sent to serve the prince of an enemy nation as a pleasure slave.

Beautiful, manipulative and deadly, his new master Prince Laurent epitomizes the worst of the court at Vere. But in the lethal political web of the Veretian court, nothing is as it seems, and when Damen finds himself caught up in a play for the throne, he must work together with Laurent to survive and save his country.

For Damen, there is just one rule: never, ever reveal his true identity. Because the one man Damen needs is the one man who has more reason to hate him than anyone else . . .

One of my favorite m/m fantasy/alternate world series ever!
By Dan Mitton
I love this series. When I realized we had never reviewed the first two books on Love Bytes, I decided I had to rectify that situation….and what better time than at the release of the third and final book of the trilogy!

I believe that there have been at least three releases done on Captive Prince and Captive Prince 2, with Captive Prince 2 becoming Prince’s Gambit somewhere along the way. The author’s name also changed somewhere along the line, since the copies I own show S. U. Pacat as the author. Regardless of the names of the books, or the name of the author, this is one of my favorite m/m series of all time.

Whichever version you pick up, I highly recommend you pick it up. If you are into stories set in alternate worlds, with swords, slaves, loads of treachery, traitors, and warrior princes and kings, all wrapped up in a great m/m storyline, then this series is for you! There isn’t a lot of sex in the first one, but it builds as it goes along. It never becomes a large focus of the story though. This series is all about the story of two men and their struggles along the way. There is a lot of brutality and did I mention the slavery? But it is handled very well and shouldn’t be a trigger for anyone. There is violence, but there would have to be wouldn’t there in a story about a Prince being sold into slavery at the command of his half-brother?

Captive Prince:

In Captive Prince, we are introduced to Damen, who has recently been imprisoned and made a slave. Damen is actually Prince Damianos of Akielos. Damen’s half-brother, the illegitimate son of their father the king, has seized power upon his death. He immediately imprisoned Damen and gave him as a gift to Laurent, the Prince of Vere, to be used as a bed slave.

Damen is drugged, and when he awakens he is in Vere. Vere and Akielos have been at war up until recently, and Prince Damianos actually killed Laurent’s brother in single combat during a battle. Knowing he will be killed immediately upon the discovery of his true identity, Damen is forced to hide his identity and only say he was a soldier while he works on trying to come up with a way to escape.

Prince Laurent is one twisted individual. He will go to any lengths possible to get revenge on Akielos for his brother’s death. When this huge hulking slave falls into his hands…it might just be what he is looking for to exact his revenge.

The characters and world building in this first book are very well done and even the background characters have full personalities. The interactions between Laurent and Damen kept me flipping the pages, causing me to grow to like them both more with every page. The book is very well written and expertly edited. One note, I did this review using a copy of the book that I bought in 2013. The newest edition is what is available on Amazon and elsewhere, but I don’t believe they were significantly changed from this version.

Prince's Gambit:

I’m just going to say it. Hello, my name is Dan and I’m a rabid fan boy of C. S. Pacat. I love, love, love, love, love this series. This is my third time through this particular book, and it always yanks me along through the wild ride of the story. Ms. Pacat’s characters are so very believable. I love her character development and her storyline. Yes, this me being all giddy about a story.

OK, enough excited fan boy action. On to the story! In Prince’s Gambit, we pick up the story immediately following the end of Captive Prince. Prince Laurent’s uncle, the Regent, has manipulated his way into forcing Laurent to go to the border, with a ragtag group of soldiers added on to the small group of loyal soldiers that Laurent has.

Along the way there will be many adventures, double crossings, lies, deceit, and an ever building smolder between the two main characters. Will the smolder become a flame? Well, you’ll just have to read it to find out now won’t you? Be prepared for twists and turns along the way. That darned Laurent is always at least one step ahead of everyone else…even if no one knows it. I think my favorite character though is Damen, because of the inner turmoil that we the readers know is going on as he submits further to being Laurent’s slave.

The book moves quite quickly. Beware though…you won’t want to put it down…so block out a lot of free time when you’re ready to start it!

I remember reading the last page of this book several times on each reading. I am soooo happy that the third book is now out so that I can keep going! I’ll be honest, I have the older version of the book, and I’ve heard there might be a bonus chapter beyond the end of the older version. I’m not sure why anyone would have messed with a good thing, because the end I have is awesome…though a cliffhanger!

Whatever version you choose to read….just read it. If you’re a fan of alternate world, fantasy, slavery, swords, kings and princes, type books, you will love this series! I very highly recommend it!

Kings Rising:

This final installment in the Captive Prince Trilogy has been a very long time coming. And it has been very anxiously awaiting by adoring fans worldwide. I was dancing around the living room in glee when it downloaded from Amazon from my pre-buy. It seemed I had been waiting forever!

The wait is over! Of course I had to drop everything and quickly read the book! I had read somewhere that someone thought a chapter had been added to the end of book two when it was re-released. I was horrified. Had I missed something? Did I need to rush out and buy the newer version? I bought books one and two as soon as they came out, so they were an older version, but I’m happy to say the third book picks up on the very next page from the end of book two in the version that I own and read, so if there is another chapter in the re-released version it isn’t on the end. If you have older versions of one and two, don’t worry, you can grab this and go!

In King’s Rising, we are back with our heroes Prince Damianos of Akielos and Prince Laurent of Vere. When we ended book two, Prince Damianos, or Damen, had just been recognized by the troops and now Prince Laurent was about to find out that he has slept with his brother’s killer! Drama!

Well, the drama doesn’t just end there. There are several twists and turns in the plot which keep you guessing. Of course, those of you who have been following along will know that Laurent always seems to be one step ahead of most things, and nothing has changed….he still is…at least for a good portion of this book.

But subterfuge, evil plots, spies and turncoats abound. Beyond the secret identity of Damen, there is a ton of other stuff going on. I have to give kudos to Ms. Pacat. All of her characters are very well written. The background characters which in other people’s works might be shallow, are all fleshed out here and well woven into the tapestry of this story.

No spoilers. I think you will love this book. I myself absolutely LOVED it. It ended EXACTLY as I thought it should. I’m so very happy! Take my advice and pick it up today. It is imperative that the series be read in order. If you haven’t read books one and two…shame on you! Get them today! I’ll warn you, they’re more expensive than many books in this genre…but worth it!

Incredibly hot series!
By Katherine V.
I always had a difficult time finding the perfect gay series that meets my standards but The Captive Prince trilogy was absolutely perfect. Though a gay romantic series, the story and writing style was incredibly well written and didn't have that immature quality that some gay fiction had. I absolutely love the characters Laurent and Damen. I love how Laurent was this beautiful and unattainable prince but was also borderline cruel and rightfully arrogant. I loved the fact that he wasn't some weak, submissive waif but was head strong and intelligent. Damen was a likeable character because he had this admirable pride and confidence and just was the perfect dom. I loved the build up of their relationship and the depiction of ancient warfare and politics. I found the series to be incredibly stiumulating and addicting.

'Hello? Is anyone home?'

Her lungs on fire, Aideen Ryan desperately heaved in some air as she waited for someone to answer her knock and call. She had run in the dark through gale-force winds and rain to get to Ashbrooke House: the only place that could give her shelter from the storm currently pounding the entire Atlantic coastline of Ireland.

Ashbrooke House, stately home of billionaire Patrick Fitzsimon. A man who, given the impenetrable walls that surrounded his vast estate and his uber-wealthy lifestyle, was unlikely to welcome her intrusion.

She straightened her rain jacket and ran a hand through her hair. Oh, for crying out loud. Her hair was a tangled mess. Soaked to the skull and resembling a frizz bomb… She really hoped it wouldn't be Patrick Fitzsimon who answered the door. Not the suave, gorgeous man she had seen in countless magazines. A man who stared at the camera with such serious intensity and intelligence that she had held her breath in alarm, worried for a few crazy seconds that he could see her spying on him.

The only sightings anyone ever made of him locally was when he was helicoptered in and out of the estate. Intrigued, she had looked him up. But just because she'd been unable to resist checking out her neighbour, one of the world's 'top ten most eligible billionaire bachelors', it didn't alter the fact that she was determined to keep her life a man-free zone.

A nearby tree branch creaked loudly as a ferocious gust of wind and rain swept up from the sea. How was her poor cottage faring in the storm without her? And how on earth was her business going to survive this?

Pushing down her spiralling panic, she took hold of the brass knocker and rapped it against the imposing door again, the metal vibrating against her skin.

'Hello? Please… I need help. Is anyone home?'

Please, please, let one of his staff answer. But the vast house remained in silence, while beyond the columned entrance porch sheets of rain swept across the often written about formal gardens of Ashbrooke.

And then slow realisation dawned. Although outside lighting had showcased the perfect symmetry and beauty of the Palla-dian house as she had run up the driveway, not a single interior light had shone through the large sash windows.

In her panic, that simple fact had failed to register with her…until now.

What if nobody was at home?

But that didn't make sense. A house this size had to have an army of staff. The classically inspired villa had a three-storey central block, connected by colonnades to two vast wings. The house was enormous—even bigger than the pictures suggested.

Somebody simply had to be home. They probably just couldn't hear her above the storm. She needed to knock louder.

She grabbed hold of the knocker again, but just as she raised it high to pound it down on the door the door swung open. As she flew forward with it all she could see was a tanned, muscular six-pack vanishing beneath a grey sweatshirt, its owner in the midst of quickly dressing. But not before she headbutted that glorious vision of masculine perfection.

It was like colliding against steel. As she ricocheted backwards she heard a loud grunt. Then hands gripped her upper arms and yanked her back from slamming bottom first on to the ground. The momentum pulled her back towards that hard body, and this time her forehead landed heavily on the person's chest with a thud.

For a moment neither of them moved, and her already spinning head became lost in a giddy sensation of warmth, the safe embrace of another human being, the deep, masculine scent of a man…

She couldn't tell who sprang away first, but as embarrassment barrelled through her, her eyes dropped down to bare feet and dark grey sweatpants before travelling back up over a long, lean, muscular body. Dark stubble lined a sculpted jawline. Taking a deep swallow, she looked up into eyes that were the light blue of an early-morning Irish spring sky. How often had she tried without success to replicate that colour in her designs?

Patrick Fitzsimon.

Those beautiful blue eyes narrowed. 'What the—?'

'I'm sorry I woke you, but my home's been flooded and everything I own is probably floating to America at this stage. I tried to drive into Mooncoyne but the road is flooded.

My car got stuck. I was so glad your gates were open… I thought they would be locked, like they usually are. I honestly didn't know what I was going to do if they were locked.'

He held up a hand in the universal stop position. 'Okay. Slow down. Let's start again. Explain to me who you are.'

Oh, why did she jabber so much when she was nervous? And, for crying out loud, did she have to blush so brightly that she could light up a small house?

Pushing her hand out towards him, she said, 'I'm Aideen Ryan. I'm your neighbour. I live in Fuchsia Cottage…down by the edge of the lough.'

He gave a quick nod of recognition, but then he drew his arms across his impossibly wide chest and his gaze narrowed even more. 'What is it you need, exactly?'

Humiliation burnt in her chest at having to ask for help from a stranger, but she looked into his cool blue eyes and blurted out what had to be said. 'I need a place to stay tonight.'

His mouth twisted unhappily. For a moment she feared he was about to close the door on her.

But instead he took a backward step and said, 'Come inside.'

At best, it was a very reluctant invitation.

The door closed behind them with a solid clunk. Without uttering a word, he left her standing alone in the vast entrance hall. Her body started to shake as her wet clothes clung to her limbs. Her teeth chattered in the vast space and, to her ears, seemed to echo off the dome-shaped ceiling, from which hung the largest crystal chandelier she'd ever seen.

Why couldn't she have a normal neighbour? Why did hers have to be a billionaire who lived in a palace at the end of a mile-long driveway? She hated having to ask for help. From anyone. But having to ask for help from a megarich gorgeous man made her feel as though the universe was having a good laugh at her expense.

When he returned, he passed her a yellow and white striped towel without comment. Accepting it gratefully, she patted her hands and face. For a moment their eyes met.

Her heart stuttered as his gaze assessed her, his generous mouth flattened into a grimace, his long legs planted wide apart, his body rigid. Her breath caught. She felt intimidated by the intensity of his stare, his size, his silent unsmiling presence. She lowered her gaze and concentrated on twisting the towel through her hair, her eyes closing as an unaccountable nervousness overtook her.

'So where's your car?'

'I tried to drive into Mooncoyne but the river had burst its banks at Foley's Bridge. It's the same on your estate—the bridge on your drive is impassable, too.'

He shook his head in confusion. 'So how did you get here?'

'I climbed on to the bridge wall and crawled along it. My car is still on the other side.'

Just great. Not only had he been woken from a jet-lagged sleep, but now he realised he was dealing with a crazy woman. This was all he needed.

'Are you serious? Are you telling me you climbed over a flooded river in gale-force winds? Have you lost your mind?'

For a moment a wounded look flashed in her cocoa-brown eyes, but then she stared defiantly back at him.

'The sea was about to flood my cottage. I called the emergency services but they are swamped with the flooding throughout Mooncoyne. And anyway they can't reach here—Foley's Bridge is impassable even to them. You're my only neighbour. There was no other place I could come to for shelter.' Throwing her head back, she took a deep breath before she continued, a tremor in her voice. 'I did contemplate staying in my car overnight, but frankly I was more concerned about hypothermia than climbing along a bridge wall.'

Okay, so she had a point. But it had still been a crazy risk to take.

He inhaled a deep breath. For the first time ever he wished his staff resided in the house. If she'd been here, his housekeeper, Maureen, would happily have taken this dishevelled woman in hand. And he could have got some much-needed sleep.

He had awoken to her knocking jet-lagged and perplexed as to how anyone had got past his security. All of Ashbrooke's thousand-acre parkland was ring-fenced by a twenty-foot stone wall, built at the same time as the house in the eighteenth century. The impenetrable wall and the electronic front gates kept the outside world away.

Well, they were supposed to.

He would be having words with his estate manager in the morning. But right now he had a stranger dripping water down on to his polished limestone floor. He had an urgent teleconference in less than four hours with Hong Kong. To be followed up with a day of endless other teleconferences to wrap up his biggest acquisition ever. The acquisition, however, was still mired in legal and technical difficulties. Difficulties his teams should have sorted out weeks ago. The arrival of his neighbour at this time of night was the last thing he needed.

He glanced at her again. She gave him a brief uncertain smile. And he did a double take. Beneath that mass of wild, out-of-control hair she was beautiful.

Full Cupid's bow lips, clear rosy skin, thick arched eyebrows and the most expressive eyes he had ever seen, framed by long dark eyelashes. Not the striking, almost hard supermodel beauty of some of his exes. She was…really pretty.

But then with a twinge of guilt he realised that she was shivering, and that she had noticeably paled in the past few minutes.

'You need to get out of those wet clothes and have a shower.'

A glimmer of heat showed on her cheeks and she shuffled uneasily. 'I don't have any spare clothes. I didn't pack any. I only had time to get some office equipment and files out…the things I had to save.'

Oh, great. Well, he didn't have any spare women's clothes hanging around here. He had never brought any of his dates to Ashbrooke. This was his sanctuary. And it had become even more so in the past few years as his ever-growing business demanded his absolute concentration.

Deep down he knew he should say some words of comfort to her. But he was no good in these situations, at saying the right thing. God knew his history with his own sister, Orla, proved that. His skill in life was making money. It clearly wasn't having effective personal relationships.

The thought of how he had failed not only Orla but also his mum and dad left a bitter taste in his mouth as his eyes moved up to meet his neighbour's. Two pools of wary brown met him. He could provide this woman with practical help. But nothing more.

'Pass me your jacket and I'll show you to a guest bedroom. I'll find you some clothes to wear while you shower.'

Her hands trembled as she shrugged off her pink and red floral rain jacket. Beneath it she wore a red and white striped cotton top, a short denim miniskirt, black wool tights and Converse trainers. Not exactly clothing suitable for being outdoors in the midst of an Atlantic storm.

The wet clothes clung to her skin. Despite himself he let his gaze trail down the soft curves of her body, gliding over the gentle slope of her breasts, narrow waist and along the long length of her legs.

When he looked up she gave a shrug. 'I didn't have time to get changed.'

She must have mistaken his stare of appreciation for incredulity. Good. He certainly didn't want her getting any other ideas.

He took her coat and in silence they walked up the stairs.

He glanced briefly at his watch. He would show her to her room and then go and get some sleep. He needed to be at the top of his game tomorrow, to unravel this mess his acquisition teams seemed incapable of sorting out.

She followed him up a cantilevered stone staircase. Despite her longing to get changed out of her rain-soaked clothes—not least her trainers, which squelched with every step—she couldn't help but stop and stare at the opulent rococo plasterwork that curved along the walls of the staircase. Exquisite delicate masks and scallop shells rendered in porcelainlike plaster had her longing to reach out and touch the silent angelic faces, which seemed to follow her steps with knowing smiles.

It was one of the most stunning rooms she had ever seen…if you could call a hallway a room. Good Lord, if the entrance hall was like this what was the rest of the house like? Talk about making a girl feel inadequate…

Ahead of her he continued to climb the stairs, his tall, broad frame causing an unwanted flip in her stomach. He was big, dark, and handsome beyond belief. And you didn't need to be Sherlock Holmes to figure out that he wasn't too keen on having her here.

Well, she wasn't too keen on being here herself. She'd much prefer to be at home, snuggled up in her own bed. Having to face the displeasure of a billionaire who, given his monumental success at such a young age, was probably hard-nosed and cold-hearted, was not exactly her idea of a fun night.

Upstairs, he led her down a neverending corridor in silence. She had an insane urge to talk, to kill the tension that seemed to simmer silently between them.

'Your helicopter often passes over my cottage. Do you travel a lot?'

'When required.'

Okay, so it hadn't been the most interesting or insightful of questions, but he could have given a little more detail in the way of an answer. It wouldn't kill him to make a little small talk with her, would it?

He stopped and opened a door, and signalled for her to enter first. As she passed he studied her with a coolness that gave nothing away. She found herself giving him an involuntary smile. But when his face remained impassive, apart from the slight narrowing of his eyes, she felt rather silly.

His cool attitude pinged in her brain like a wake-up call. She was here out of necessity, not because she wanted to be, and he shouldn't be making her feel so uneasy. She straightened her back with resolve and pride and marched further into the room. First thing tomorrow morning she was out of here.

But she hadn't gone far when her steps faltered. 'Oh, wow, this bedroom is stunning…and it's huge! A family of six could easily sleep in that bed.'

An imposing oversized bed sat in the middle of the room, surrounded by sofas and occasional chairs covered in glazed cotton in varying tones of sage-green. An antique desk and a vanity table sat either side of the white marble fireplace.

He didn't acknowledge her words of admiration but instead made for the door. 'I'll go and get you some clothes to change into.'
