About the Author
Pavel Baev is a Senior Researcher and Head of Section at the Institute of Europe, Russian Academy of Sciences. He has written this book while on sabbatical leave as a researcher at the International Peace Research Institute, Oslo. He was previously a Senior Researcher at the Scientific-Research Institute of the Soviet Ministry of Defence, 1979 to 1988. His publications include Tactical Nuclear Weapons in Europe: The Problem of Reduction and Elimination. He is co-editor of the quarterly journal Security Dialogue.

The Chechen war put in a historical context

Dr Pavel Baev is a Senior Researcher and Head of Section at the Institute of Europe, Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow. He wrote this valuable book, which puts the Chechen war in its historical context, while working as a researcher at the International Peace Research Institute in Oslo. Although his Preface is dated February 1996, his main findings have not yet been changed by the important Presidential election in July and the subsequent developments in Chechnya in early September.
This book focuses primarily on the interaction between the Army and politics as this has become the decisive force in reforming the former as well as an important factor in framing the latter. Baev traces the Army and politics in its historical perspective and highlights Russia's territorial expansion in Europe in the 15th to 19th centuries. The incorporation of new provinces was driven not so much by messianic ideas or economic greed as by the fear of penetrating invasions and concern about being isolated from Europe. After the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, the empire in its main features was restored in the course of a few years, to be expanded by Stalin and preserved by his successors until the mid-1980s. By then strategic over-extension and ideological impotence had become self-evident. There was a direct link between the survivability of an authoritarian regime and the efficiency and reliability of its military tools.
By the mid-1980s as the new generation of Afghan-hardened warriors moved to the top of the military hierarchy, a new period opened up in the Army's involvement in politics. But when the direct order was given to move into Chechnya in December 1994, the military leadership failed to stand on its objections, in much the same way as in Afghanistan some 15 years earlier. By the autumn of 1992, the `Near Abroad' rather than the West had become the crucial external challenge to Russia's security. Geopolitics had successfully replaced Communist ideology as the conceptual basis for Russia's foreign policy. Local wars were identified as the main threat. In 1993, Russia was declared the guarantor of stability in the former Soviet Union. But the Chechen war in December 1994 dramatically changed the political landscape in Moscow. If the military stubbornly continued to see NATO as the potential enemy, they were much quicker in recognizing the new security risks in Russia's Near Abroad.
What started to emerge in Moscow from mid-1992 was a sort of coexistence between the political and military institutions. In early October 1993, the tanks not only arrived to back President Yeltsin, but indeed blasted the Russian White House, thereby raising dramatically the threshold of political violence. This marked the peak of Defence Minister General Grachev's career. But General Lebed was among the first to oppose the easy solution of a small-and-successful war in Chechnya, and Grachev's personal role in waging it. It was only after the New Year (1995) assault on Grozny that the real scale of the disaster in the armed forces became clear. While the political leadership relied more and more on military means, they in fact invested little effort in modernization. Military reform was not implemented and a demoralized army, as Lebed foresaw, lacked the cohesion to resist. The high command allowed for rapid decline in all basic components of Russia's defence posture. The failure to build combat-worthy mobile forces was revealed dramatically by the war in Chechnya.
The post-Soviet conflicts in 1992 concerned three attempted secessions (Nagorno-Karabakh from Azerbaijan, Transdniestria from Moldova, South Ossetia from Georgia) and civil war in Tadzhikistan. Russia's dominance in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) was, however, strong enough to guarantee that both the Organization and its member states would remain silent about the war in Chechnya. Since the summer of 1992, the deployment of Russian troops resulted in the cessation of violence in five hot spots: Transdniestria, South and North Ossetia, Abkhazia and Western Georgia, and the conflict in Tadzhikistan became controllable. But the intervention in Chechnya in December 1994 marked the breaking point for the stabilization trend. The amount of military effort wasted in Chechnya directly undermined Russia's ability to maintain the peacekeeping in Abkhazia or to continue the military presence in Transcaucasus. Indeed, the region where Russia's positions have been damaged most by the Chechen war is the Caucasus. Despite the efforts of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) to propose mediation, Russia remained unwilling to allow any real internationalization of the Chechen conflict.
It is already clear that the impact of the Chechen campaign will go beyond that of the Afghan war and could be compared with such military disasters as the Crimean war of 1854-55 and the Russo-Japanese war of 1905. Already in August 1995, Grachev's critics predicted: `Russia will get a combat-unable, poorly equipped and poorly trained, impoverished and alienated Army, which will not be able to defend the country from an external threat and will become an internal threat'. Baev's analysis does not go beyond February 1996. Hence it does not take into account Yeltsin's re-election in July, General Lebed's eleven million votes, his subsequent nomination as Yeltsin's security chief, Lebed's precarious truce with the Chechen rebel chief of staff, Aslan Maskhadov, at first threatened by a broad array of Lebed's opponents in the Kremlin and by an ailing Yeltsin's deafening silence. The truce culminated, however, in the peace agreement signed by Lebed and Maskhadov on 31 August deferring any decision on whether Chechnya should be independent from the Russian Federation until 31 December 2001. It was also agreed to set up a joint commission to monitor the complete withdrawal of Russian troops and coordinate steps in fighting crime and terrorism.
Yeltsin broke his silence in early September, first by congratulating Lebed's chief opponent, Anatoli Kulikov, the Minister of Interior, on his role in the Chechen crisis, which was followed by his statement of 5 September admitting his need for by-pass heart surgery. While Yeltsin backed Lebed's peace plan with the exception of the fast and prompt withdrawal of Russian troops, he came under growing pressure to step down and appoint his replacement in order to avoid a dangerous power vacuum before, during and after the period of his heart surgery - not to mention the growing speculation about Yeltsin's likely inability to hold his grip on power during the next four years. On 10 September Yeltsin decided to appoint Prime Minister Chernomyrdin as his temporary replacement, probably to curb Lebed's ambition. It remains to be seen whether Baev's final assumption will or will not be validated by events: `The weakening and degradation of Yeltsin's regime and the uncertainties of political transition to a post-Yeltsin period are bringing Russia to another cross-roads in its long and turbulent history - and the force that decides the direction could well be the unreformed, politicized and frustrated Army'.

this is a super cute book

The Angry Birds Movie junior novel.. this is a super cute book, which is true to the movie. I read this book with a 7 years old girl and she loved it. she was able to follow along easily and liked the small set of colored pictures in the middle of the book. multiple times she compared the book to the movie which was great. the book is relatively well made, and the color pictures are great. if you like the movie you'll like the book..

Recommendation: avoid this depressing story

THE THROWAWAY CHILDREN is not badly written, hence the two-star rating instead of just one star. But this book should come with a major warning: Only proceed if you want to be traumatized and depressed. I wish someone had warned me, so I wouldn't have the sick feeling this book has left me with.

The story is that of two sisters in post-WWW-II England, whose selfish, callous widowed mother signs them over to the children's services because she chooses the abusive man who knocked her up over the two little girls he doesn't want to have around, marriage to and the dubious financial benefits of the violent alcoholic boyfriend being more important to dear mum than her daughters.

Lovely beginning, and it only gets worse.

**SPOILERS AHEAD**

The girls are sent to a workhouse-like orphanage, subjected to harsh conditions and physical abuse. When it appears their grandmother's ineffectual efforts to get them back might bring to light the conditions at the orphanage, the director of the orphanage whisks them onto a ship bound for a sister orphanage in Australia. After a very brief time there, the girls are separated when the younger is adopted and torn away, literally, from her sister. At about the 55% point in the book, when the five-year-old is first sexually molested by her adoptive father, is when I wised up and stopped reading and just scanned a couple points throughout the rest of the book, enough to determine that the little girl eventually kills herself rather than be returned to her abuser. Apparently, the older sister does marry and does have a reunion with her grandmother and teenaged half-brother (who was orphaned after his father killed his mother), so I guess that qualifies as a "happy" ending, technically.

I think that, for me, part of what was so awful about this story, aside from the relentless parade of bad things that happen to the two innocent young girls, was how throughout the book, decent people -- teachers, a police constable, neighbors, even to an extent their grandmother -- saw that conditions were bad *and did nothing* just walked away, often thinking how it would be hard to put it from their minds (apparently, not hard enough!) It was like, okay, as if what happens to the girls isn't awful enough, the author made it overwhelmingly depressing by showing that *no one* cared about others enough to bestir themselves on even these helpless children's behalf. Maybe that's more realistic than not -- I pray it's not -- but it makes for a disturbing reading experience that I wish I could erase from my memory.

I strongly recommend that unless you enjoy reading about mistreated children, you avoid this book. I would have appreciated someone warning me before I wasted a couple hours on a book which has left me feeling terrible.

Gripping story; well worth the read

I first downloaded this book as a "oh, this will be a nice orphan children story that will make me feel good." Nope, it didn't make me feel good. Its not a fluff book; it has substance to it and it made me think. In the long run, these are the types of books I enjoy the most because they are the ones that stay with me long after my device says "100%" completed. It has moral themes without being preachy and it made me look around my world to see how I could make it better.

Please note for conservative readers that because this book sticks to authentic character development, there is mild language; its not a kids read aloud. I am a conservative reader, but I felt that the language was appropriately used and wasn't constantly "in your face" throughout the book.

This also wasn't a book I read from start to finish in one sitting; the plot and themes were too much to take in all at once. Rather, I took time to live the story right along with Rita and Rosie and the other well written characters. I loved the ending - it was satisfying yet not so completely perfect that it felt fake.

This book will haunt me for a while and was definitely worth the time spend savoring it.

Unable to continue because I couldn't sleep

Of what I read I thought the writing is good. But I was so distressed with how the young girls at the orphanage were treated that I couldn't sleep. I had to stop reading about a quarter of the way through. I understand that it may reflect how children were treated. And I know there are places in the world today where children are treated even worse. But it bothered me too much to continue reading. Because of that I can't recommend it.

An enchanting world

These books delighted and enchanted me as a child. I only ever owned a copy of one of the books and it is well worn. I wanted to share these with my own children and recently bought the kindle edition with all four. My 8-year-old recently read them and I know she was as equally enchanted. After she was done she told me she was sad to have finished them and wished there were more in the series. Love these books!

My children love these stories and I loved reading them aloud. I'm not sure why they don't seem to be as popular as other series. I would definitely read them if you like Harry Potter (they are less serious and scary than Harry Potter, so they are a good introduction to the fantasy genre.)

Good fantasy series for older children and up.

Nicely written and plotted, wry, sweet, and a bit silly. Obviously a kids' series, but still enjoyable by adults. Can't give it 5 stars, but I definitely enjoyed it and will look up the rest of Ms. Wrede's books.

Great Start for Drupal 8 theming concepts for intermediate Drupal Users

As of this morning, I have completed the book and Worked through the entire thing and all the exercises.

Preface: Drupal 8 is still really new. A lot of things have and will continue to change and some of the examples in the book will need updating, or a little digging by the reader to get things working right. In my opinion this book is best for people who are already comfortable with older versions of Drupal, have done some theming with PHPTemplate (.tpl.php files) and are ready to jump into changing over to TWIG theming within Drupal 8. Since I purchased the book the author has been very helpful and has updated the files that go along with the book. I've had success and learned a lot but it has taken some work. D8 is a moving target to write tutorials for. You will need to be comfortable running a virtual server environment. I would definitely call this an intermediate book. its NOT at a beginner level.

I learned a LOT reading through this and doing the exercises and it was a valuable experience. The exercise had me going all over Drupal 8's updated interface, working with many files, and I feel much more 'at home' working in Drupal 8 in general, not just theming, than before I read it.

Database Imports: As of the release new set of files to go with the book, Database imports were working great for me. The old set did not. I would not let this deter you. I got through the first 7-8 chapters without importing the database. Creating a small amount of content myself that 'mimicked' what was in the book was all it took. a small hurdle.

The book introduced me to all kinds of great libraries I could import to extend Drupal's theme functionality. Before, I was trying to do everything with a module. Turn's out it is very easy to add functionality to Drupal 8 with libraries that don't have a module to support them.

Overall, this was a somewhat challenging experience, which is why i rated 4 stars instead of 5. But it was very worthwhile and I came away knowing a lot more. Some of the struggles I had with the early stuff ended up making me feel more confident as my troubleshooting skills improved.

This book fills a really needed niche for those who don't have a mentor to sit down with them and show them how to theme Drupal 8 in person. I highly recommend giving it a try.

Some good, lot's of bad.

The book itself is interesting. It starts from very basics of Drupal theming and presented material flows logically. But the source code supplied with the book is not exactly the same as described in the book. Material from Chapter 4 is totally different. In chapter 5, if database is restored from octo.sql backup file, my web site crashes. This makes following step by step instructions of how to create a new theme using accompanying files impossible. Very bad learning experience. I am frustrated.

Lovely rendition of a 400 year old favorite

There have been many versions of this beloved 400 year old folk tale told in song. This one has beautiful drawings. The wording is somewhat modernized - the frog rides up to mouse's store, not mouse's hall - but is still faithful to the spirit of the older versions. I look forward to reading and singing it with my 6 year old grandson.
