Half-Forgotten Things focuses on the Aberásturis, a prominent Spanish Basque family in Malitbog, a town in the island of Southern Leyte, the Philippines.
The memoir opens as Txomin Aberásturi returns to his hometown for a visit with his family after a long absence. From the landscape, replete with familiar colors, sounds, aromas, and from warm encounters with loved ones, memories arise and are vividly recounted. We become familiar with aspects of the family's successful shipping and export business. We are presented with anecdotes of family adventures, squabbles and scandals which, although they take place in another place and time, touch a universal human chord.
When Txomin is eight years old, Pearl Harbor is bombed and life on the Philippines, and everywhere else, changes dramatically. It is riveting to hear the details of life under Japanese Occupation from the author who, while extremely knowledgeable about the Second World War, nonetheless writes with a child's clarity of vision. Particularly compelling is the child’s narrative of the Japanese occupation during World War II, eye-opening in its unflinching depiction of brutality interspersed with the ongoing routine of everyday life.
There are many memorable characters depicted in Half-Forgotten Things, with traits to remind us of personalities encountered in our own lives. One of these is the American captain who helps organize the guerrilla movement in Leyte during the Second World War, falls in love with Txomin's beautiful cousin, and brings her with him to the mountains of Leyte, to the boondocks, as the Americans call them, a word which originates from the Philippine word bundok, meaning mountain, a word which later finds its way into the English language, and dictionary. Their story is the basis of the book, and later the movie, An American Guerilla in the Philippines, starring Tyrone Power. Some of these portraits are disturbing, some are hilarious. The most compelling portrait in the book is that of the author's father, a man of overwhelming integrity and compassion, a hero to his son and to the reader.
Txomin's father, Dionisio Aberásturi, a Basque from Vizcaya, Spain who came to the Philippines at the early part of the 20th century, at the hub of his family and of this memoir, is defined not only by his unshakable uprightness, but by his actions, all the more remarkable because they are not fictional.
Two sisters of the author are at a boarding school in a Basque village of Larrauri, near Guernica, when the Spanish Civil War breaks out. The Murder of Guernica, Basques call that April afternoon when Germany “tested the waters in Spain” on the eve of the Second World War and poured kilos of bombs on the defenseless town. This event is vividly recounted.
The Battle of Leyte Gulf, “the greatest of all naval battles,” is described in precise, almost cinematic, detail, with young Txomin a witness to the beginnings of this definitive historical event.
After the war, since the U. S. Army needs abaca, it becomes possible to restart the family business. The author works hard alongside his father until he goes off to college. While he is away, his father dies in a tragic accident and Txomin returns for the funeral. The absence of his father is as palpable as his presence always was. The reader is swept with the enormous emptiness he leaves.
Txomin Aberasturi was an engineer. He worked as a math teacher and later managed a bulk plant for Mobil Oil in the Philippines. He died in New York in 2007. Nilda Aberásturi lives in New York, has finished a novel and is working on another book. This is the authors’ first literary work.

Nostalgic, witty, funny
By Amazon Customer
Nostalgic, witty and funny. What a remarkable love letter to a small town in southern Philippines. Written with affection, it got those who know the place longing to go back to it. This true story is like a charming tale of the verdant countryside and white beaches, the lusty neighborhoods and the sweet secrets of its townspeople, all intermingled with the gentleness and foibles of its families. A good read indeed. It also helps that the writing is crisp and lush, like the time that it was before the Great War. There are lots of things in this small book: pathos, scandals, hilarity, passion, and of course, love; but the book is also an evocative reflection on a place of one’s youth that is long gone but whose bittersweet memories still linger on, like a feeling of great forlornness. I just love this book.
