Dear Reader,
Welcome to the first book in my Sierra Legacy series. Like my three previous books, it is set in my fictional town of Benson, California. I found that I wasn't ready to leave my beloved Eastern Sierra setting yet!
So please let me introduce you to the Hoffman family - or at least the small part of the family that isn't on the run from the law. Two siblings, Nora and Wade Hoffman, raised in Benson, in a notorious criminal family, and grappling with the legacy of their family's poor choices. Their stories will be the first two books in this series.
Wild Horses is Nora's story - but not hers alone. She shares it with the wild horses that roam the high desert surrounding the town of Benson. Horses whose lives are in peril.
While researching the east side of the Sierra Nevada for my previous books, I learned of the issues facing our nation's wild horses. The more I read about the horses' plight, the more I was drawn to the intense conflict that surrounds them. Are these beautiful animals an important part of our history? Or just a feral pest that should be eradicated and forgotten?
The country's past and present collide around the lives of wild horses. And I wanted to write a romance that mirrored this struggle. So I created wild and restless Todd Williams, who, armed with a strong sense of justice, has made saving the wild horses his cause. And I imagined cautious and practical plant biologist Nora Hoffman, who is documenting the negative effects the wild horses have on the native plants in their range lands.
And then I gave Nora and Todd a past with a wild love. A first love so great that when it ended, neither of them could forget it. And now, years after their break up, I've brought them together again. Past and present, colliding out on the range lands, east of the Sierras.

Claire McEwen enjoys challenges and happy endings, so when someone suggested she write a romance novel she thought, “Why not?” She wrote a page, fell in love with writing, and her life has never been quite the same. She abandoned her career to write as much as possible and now spends a lot of her time with imaginary people. When not writing, she enjoys digging in her garden, playing on the beach, hiking, traveling, and reading, of course!

Five Stars for this Second Chance Romance!

I'm not always a huge fan of second chance romances, usually it depends on the circumstances on how it ended in the first place. I will say that I am so glad that I picked this gem up :-) I really found myself rooting for Nora, and I felt like I could relate to her. Nora and Todd (Our heroine and hero) were lovers in college, and ended up going separate ways after they graduated. Nora had to go back home and help take care of things in the family. Todd seemed to live more in the moment, and just had a different personality than Nora.
I don't want to spoil too much of the plot, but I can say that these two experience some bumps and bruises along the way, but they eventually start seeing eye to eye. I love a good Western read, and the cover drew me in. I am a huge sucker for horses - I love them! So this book earned a soft spot in my heart.
I really enjoyed Claire McEwen's writing style. Her writing flowed very well, and I was kept entertained throughout the book. There were no painful lags, or unnecessary extra descriptions that I feel like I've been coming across lately in other reads. I am also happy that I choose to read it over a weekend, because I'm pretty sure that my family would have had to pry it out of my hands. I would definitely recommend this book!

Wild Horses a Refreshing Story!!!

Wild Horses by Claire McEwen was a great refreshing story. This book was very well written the Todd and Nora became part of your family, you felt all their emotions. This book was taste of fresh air for me, I am looking to reading more story by Claire McEwen. Do yourself a favor and read this book, you will love it too.

4.5 Stars! Very Unique Book! Loved it! (Which Wins - Professional Calling or Calling of the Heart?)

Wild Horses presents a very unique and thought-provoking storyline. Nora Hoffman, the main character, is a field biologist, who is returning to her small hometown to deal with the economic mess legacy her not-there-for-her/crooked parents have left her and her brother. Her brother, Wade, is dealing with demons of his own, as a decorated U.S. Veteran coming back from war, and trying to start his own ranch. Both are dealing with the prevalent town negative gossip/backlash from their parents' bad choices during their childhood. Also, she has not dated since the love of her life (Todd) ditched her immediately upon college graduation, who is a head-strong, naive, overly-idealistic, passionate, eco-warrior, to pursue his own career dreams. To Nora's dismay, Todd and she end up in the same small town about a decade later at the same time for different and opposite professional work reasons. The question on the table is, which wins - professional calling or calling of the heart?
Pros: 1) The author delves into each character's head and creates three flawed and highly-believable characters fighting the inner demons of scarring childhoods. All the characters have incredible insight to their weaknesses and yet, harbor them as inner secrets, causing pain and heartache directly & indirectly to each other. None of these characters are fit partners or in the case of her brother, really fit for life, however, through their juxtaposition in the small town, all three begin a telling growth process. 2) This book has narrative believability. Claire McEwen proves that not only can you have an intelligent, scientific female main character, but that it does not have to de-evolve into "nerdy" or "Einstein" intelligence stereotypes. Unlike “The Big Bang Theory,” I am intrigued by Claire's emotionally fragile, more girl-next-door, feminine approach. I was also extremely impressed with how real-life accurate and dramatic the final conflict was.
Cons: 1) The Main Heartthrob, a “pretty boy,” isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. It is the mark of a great writer, when a well-written character can invoke a negative response in a reader. This is not your typical "book boyfriend." Todd is extremely flawed, and some readers may get completely turned off by his style. However, I found his idealism realistically portrayed and liked it. 2) My one major caveat is that I found Nora’s romantic response to Todd _before_ the final conflict in the book slightly unrealistic to this otherwise exceptional book (which is why this is 4.5 stars rather than a full 5 stars).
Highly recommend this book to Romance & SuperRomance readers. It will keep you thrilled throughout. The grittiness of the small town, the country-western theme, the complex backstories and interesting small town characters, make this a perfect, take-me-away yet relatable real-life problems blend. For those who love environmentalism, buy this book and support environmentalism in romance! :)
