Dangerous To Know ~ 3,75 stars

While I appreciate a book that starts of right in the story and doesn’t have this whole introduction feeling to it, Dangerous To Know would have needed exactly that. I felt a bit lost. Too many story lines, that I magically should have been able to follow right from the start. Too many characters I couldn’t place because I didn’t get their connection to each other at first, like when you miss twenty seconds of a tv show and 30 minutes later you finally find out that the girl and boy are actually siblings, while everyone else already knew that information. That is exactly how I felt at the beginning of Dangerous To Know.
BUT it got better. After I got a grip on the story I really liked reading the story and subplot. One factor that also played into me liking it, is that I really liked the writing style of Dawn Ryker. She wrote the book in a way that it was pretty easy and fast to read. Also Dangerous To Know is written in big chapters, so I always had a long excuse for not doing dishes and that stuff, because I had to “finish the chapter”.
Now on to the characters. A sad thing I have to say is that while I liked Zoe and Mercer individual, I thought they had absolutely no chemistry for most of the book. Nearly at the end I felt some sparks between them, but before that… nothing.
The side characters were interesting. I am especially intrigued by Vitus and Saxon. I really want to see more of those two brothers.
I can’t wait to find out what character will be featured in the next book and how the story continues.

Smokin' romantic suspense

This is the first novel I've read by this author, and the first novel in her Unbroken Heroes series, and if this book is any indication of what to expect, I can't wait to read the next one.
The novel starts out a bit rough--we're introduced to a number of military characters and the relationships between and among them in the world of shadow ops takes a while to sort out, and just when you think you have them all sorted out, you learn that you don't, but this is a romantic suspense novel after all, with the accent on suspense, and unraveling this plot is a lot like peeling away the layers of an onion.
This is also one heck of a romance novel, a very hot romance novel, our heroine being Zoe Magnus, daughter of a Colonel, sister of agent, both of whom are currently deployed overseas. If there's anything Zoe isn't, it's a pushover, at least until she goes out to bar with her best friend Roni, and meets Mercer. Zoe can spot a military man blindfolded, and Mercer does admit to being former Navy, but that's all he admits. When these two start talking to each other, the heat level between them is beyond incendiary, although Zoe manages not to fall into bed with him immediately--her resolve not to get involved with him doesn't last long, and when these two do come together it's like a pool of gasoline and a lit match.
What Zoe doesn't know is that getting close to her, extremely close to her, is part of Mercer's mission objective, as is proving that she and/or her father and brother are traitors, secretly selling and transmitting military secrets such as troop positions to the enemy. He doesn't much care what he has to do to get to the truth, although we do begin to see him care for Zoe; he certainly has can't seem to keep his hands off her, but is it part of an act or does he really care? Mercer is everything you'd want a hero to be, strong, protective, more than a little suspicious, driven to find the truth, and driven wild by Zoe, who manages to hold her own against this overwhelmingly alpha male.
Much of this novel is about trust, and when sniper fire almost takes out the two of them, the plot and the action really rev up, and they do so without let-up, while keeping the reader almost as much in the dark as the two main characters. The plot and its layers upon layers of secrets is incredibly complex and totally gripping.
The only reason I gave this book a 4.5 star rating rather than a 5-star rating is the ending, which is very abrupt. This novel really needs an epilogue, because although there's a HEA ending, there's also a much too brief lead-in to what will follow in the author's next novel.
