Vladimir Tasić, selbst Mathematiker, setzt sich mit großer Faszination mit Castoriadis' "Gesellschaft als Imaginäre Institution" und Badious "Das Sein und das Ereignis" auseinander. Dabei entdeckt er verblüffende Ähnlichkeiten zwischen Mengen, Geistern, Göttern und Mythen. Er untersucht die Zusammenhänge von (mathematischen) Notationen, umgangssprachlicher Begriffsbildung, Formalismus, Bedeutung und Existenz eben dieser zu beschreibenden Objekte. Aber nicht nur Begriffe sind wichtig in einem System, auch seine Geschichte. Wir sehen, dass bestimmte Denkweisen oder Methoden eines Systems in eine Sackgasse führen müssen. Revolutionäre neue Erkenntnisse stehen oft im Widerspruch zu altem Denken. Dieses muss also überwunden werden. Tasić zeigt einen Weg (in Sackgassen hinein und hinaus) entlang wichtiger mathematischer Ereignisse: von der cantorschen Mengendefinition über die Grundlagenkrise der Mathematik, dem Hilbertprogramm, dem gödelschen Unvollständigkeitstheorem bis zur Zermelo-Fraenkel-Axiomatik.
Da die cantorsche Mengendefintion nicht widerspruchsfrei ist, aber für fast jede mathematische Theorie (mindestens im Formalismus) grundlegend ist, stellt sich die Frage nach einer Alternative, dem Sinn der Formalisierung und der Möglichkeit des Ausdrückens in der Umgangssprache, der Widerspruchsfreiheit der Mathematik insgesamt und ihren Anwendungen. Tasić widmet sich diesen großen erkenntnistheoretischen Problemen anhand eines Diskurses von Castoriadis' und Badious Ansichten.
