To it Mr. Bishop brought his painstaking interest in detail, his reporter’s curiosity, his layman’s interest in the world of the theater, and his detachment. And Away You Will Go!

Very good portrait of the man on his way up. He seems to live by the Honeymooner's phrase "Be kind to the people you meet on the way up....'cause they're gonna be the same people you meet on the way down". As a kid, starting out, he bet that he was gonna be bigger than Berle, but when he got his own television show he sent a suitcase of clothes to a club he worked in just in case he needed to be there again "on the way down". The only problem I have for this book is the fact that it had many typos.

Watched his wonderful variety show on TV and enjoyed all the characters ...

I have been a fan of Jackie Gleason for many, many years. Watched his wonderful variety show on TV and enjoyed all the characters he invented to bring him to the star status he earned. He worked so hard and the book showed how difficult it was for him to grow up without a father and the terrible way his mother died from a massive infection, made you feel so sorry for the little boy. This book shows how he grew up to be "The Greatest" and how he had a big heart and finally achieves some happiness in his life. From The Honeymooners, the Poor Soul, Reginald Van Gleason, Joe the Bartender and many other characters he met along the way as a boy, a teenager and a man. He turned them into the heart and soul of his career and we were the luckier for it. Great book on a great man.
