From Publishers Weekly
In Barbieri's angst-filled third Maeve Conlon thriller (after Lies That Bind), the baker's decision to hire single mother Trish Dvorak leads to serious trouble. When Farringville, N.Y., high school nurse Judy Wilkerson phones Maeve one day, Maeve discovers that she's Trish's emergency contact for Trish's 17-year-old daughter, Taylor, who's sick and wants to go home. Maeve gives permission for Taylor to leave school, but the teen never arrives at home. The police, including Maeve's boyfriend, Det. Chris Larsson, are unable to find a clue to the missing girl's whereabouts. When Wilkerson claims that Maeve refused to pick up Taylor, Maeve decides to look for Taylor herself. Her sleuthing leads to good-looking soccer coach David Barnham, who's too close to the girl players; a trio of high school boys on police radar; and Taylor's wealthy father, who refuses to acknowledge his daughter. Maeve's investigative style consists mostly of blunders, and she behaves in erratic ways that don't add up to a convincing whole. Agent: Deborah Schneider, Gelfman Schneider Agency. (Mar.)

Will Have You Guessing Who is Friend and Who is Foe
By Miss Monograms
Maeve Conlon’s got a lot on her plate. Her two daughters, a boyfriend who happens to be in law enforcement, an ex-husband she just slept with, a kidnapping that she’s being blamed for, a skeezy soccer coach, an older sister with a question mark when it comes to paternity, a best friend with baby-brain, a pair of bright pink sneakers she can’t seem to break in, oh, and her bakery to run. Maeve sucks you into her world, the sleepy town of Farringville; a nightmare dressed as all up as a daydream (as my girl Taylor Swift would say,) where you can never quite be sure if the guy you pass on the street is friend or foe. Just below the surface of this idyllic appearing town lays a very darker reality and you get to follow Maeve as she starts exploring the shadows.
After a bursting-at-the-seams-with-privilege parent college meeting at her daughter’s private high school, Maeve is impressed with a fellow single mom’s take no prisoners attitude and hires her on the spot to help around her bakery. Before Maeve can even decide if she made the right decision hiring a woman she barely knows, the school nurse calls saying her new employee’s daughter is sick. Put on the spot, Maeve agrees under pressure from the school nurse to let the girl, Taylor, walk home.
Taylor never makes it home and the school nurse changes her story to place the blame on Maeve. Not willing to just sit around and hope the local police find Taylor and clear her name, Maeve jumps straight in, facing a constant stream of lies and half-truths, some involving her own daughter Heather. As the stakes continue to rise, Maeve finds a lot more than she bargains for. If she wants to find Taylor before it’s too late, she’ll have to find the truths in the lies and confront a few painful revelations of her own.
Lie in Plain Sight is a page turner; I couldn’t put it down! It’s a perfect balance of mystery and chick-lit. I can’t wait to read the other two books in the Maeve Conlon series, along with the Murder 101 series by Maggie Barbieri.

Another perplexing and complex mystery featuring Maeve Conlon (4.5 stars)
By K. Branfield
Lie in Plain Sight, the third installment in Maggie Barbieri’s series featuring baker (and amateur sleuth) Maeve Conlon, is another perplexing and complex mystery.
When Taylor, the daughter of her newly hired employee Trish Dvorak, goes missing, Maeve cannot help but feel responsible. Although Maeve’s boyfriend, Detective Chris Larsson, is on the case, she knows both Chris and the small town police department are out of their depth so she begins investigating the disappearance on her own. When she discovers another teenage girl from a neighboring town vanished without a trace under eerily similar circumstances the previous year, Maeve is convinced there is a connection between the two cases.
Maeve is still a little impulsive and it does not take long for her to become obsessed with trying to find Taylor. She often acts without thinking and while most of the time this is not a problem, she occasionally ends up some rather dangerous situations. Determined, intelligent and headstrong, Maeve does not hesitate to act on her suspicions which often results in some rather unpleasant confrontations with the town’s residents. Despite her slightly off center moral compass, Maeve has the best of intentions when she begins her investigation into Taylor’s disappearance and it is impossible to find fault with her reaction when she uncovers the truth.
Maeve’s personal life remains a bit of a mess and her relationships with daughter Heather, ex-husband Cal and boyfriend Chris continue to be complicated. She and Heather are often at odds and their moments of closeness are fleeting since it does not take much for their interactions to rapidly deteriorate. Ex-husband Cal’s current marriage unexpectedly hits a rough patch and Maeve’s somewhat turbulent relationship with him becomes even more awkward and tense. Her romance with Chris begins to falter under the weight of her dark secrets and her inability to completely honest with him about certain aspects of her life. Throw in Maeve’s lack of confidence in Chris as a detective and their relationship becomes even more rocky.
Fast-paced with an intriguing storyline, Lie in Plain Sight is a riveting mystery that fans of the genre are sure to enjoy. With a long list of suspects and plenty of small town secrets, Maggie Barbieri brilliantly obscures the truth about Taylor’s disappearance until the novel’s dramatic conclusion. It is another wonderful (and quite possibly, last :( ) installment in the Maeve Conlon series that I absolutely loved and highly recommend.

We all lie, right?
By Donna Townsend
“You’ve changed.” Great opening for an intriguing, complex mystery. Maeve Conlon is a bakery owner hitting middle age with a vengeance. She feels it is up to her to find her daughter’s missing classmate; along the way she uncovers long-buried secrets and scandals, impacting not just her but much of the town.
This is the third book in the Maeve Conlon series, all of which feature the word “Lie.” This is the first one I’ve read but I assume the premise is that everyone, most particularly, Maeve, lies. She seems to accept that she is imperfect; indeed she seems to have few regrets, particularly for those who have died at her hand. Let’s just say, if this were the Old West, she would have some notches on her gun belt.
This is not a likeable, sympathetic woman. She is driven by her ugly past, but does, on some level, seem to wonder if perhaps she is not normal. She decorates cupcakes, makes quiche and stalks the bad guys. A neat contrast, indeed.
A big fan of Barbieri’s Murder 101 series, I found this book a major departure from that cozy-like format. While still undecided about this Maeve woman, I have ordered and will read, the first two books. You’ve changed, Maggie. Nicely done!
