About the Author
Shobha Rao moved to the U.S. from India at the age of seven. She is the winner of the 2014 Katherine Anne Porter Prize in Fiction, awarded by Nimrod International Journal. She has been a resident at Hedgebrook and is the recipient of an Elizabeth George Foundation fellowship. Her story “Kavitha and Mustafa” was chosen by T.C. Boyle for inclusion in the Best American Short Stories 2015. She lives in San Francisco.

The reason I say "paired" in quotes is I'm not sure that's the best word to describe it

This book contains six sets of "paired" short stories, twelve stories total. The reason I say "paired" in quotes is I'm not sure that's the best word to describe it. Some of the connections between the stories were obvious, but the characters of some of the second stories were mentioned only very briefly in the first story, or the first story character was mentioned very late in the second story, so the relevance between the two was much more difficult to identify: Instead of saying these are "paired" stories, I'd say they "share a tangent". I did manage to see the connection between five of the six sets of stories, though. By the time I got to the one I had trouble with, I'd already figured out that the connections were really only tangents, so I was paying really close attention to all of the details of the second story, but I just couldn't figure out the commonality.
All of the stories were decent; some of them were a little boring, but none so bad that I couldn't finish. I did have an obvious favorite between just about every pair, and I wanted more from some of them, so that's a good sign. The stories were pretty believable, about some touchy subjects, but none of them had anything offensive, in my opinion. By reading it, you could learn quite a bit about what life was (is?) like for some men and women in India and Pakistan. The title of the book suggests that all of the stories are about women, but that's not the case; it's simply the title of the very first story it contains (one of my favorites). My only complaint about the book (a minor one) is that the page numbers in the table of contents didn't accurately give the pages each story started on, by my copy of the book is unofficial, so that problem was likely fixed before the final printing.

Definitely a 5-Star Read

Shobha Rao has given us a beautiful collection of 12 subtly interconnected stories that revolve around the Partition of India and Pakistan and the far reaching effects of that event. The book shares its title with the first story. As the author explains, after Partition, the Indian government passed the Abducted Persons (Recovery and Restoration) Act to assist the many women who became victims of the violence between Hindus and Muslims. Here, she has chosen to use the word restored in place of the more commonly used recovered. While woman and children felt the brunt of the conflict, men were not immune, and Rao tells representative stories of a wide variety of persons. An abused child bride, believing her husband has been killed in the burning of a train, experiences a few brief days of peace, love, and freedom. A disgraced British officer, sent to a small, obscure Indian town to serve as lead constable, faces the task of telling his Sikh assistant's wife that she is a widow--and faces secrets of his own. That same man shows up in New York 40 years later as a hotel doorman, a secondary character in the story of a failing marriage and sisterly betrayal. A young man surveying part of the new borderline uses his position in a ploy to wed the young woman he desires--with disastrous consequences. A Hindu teenager, abducted by a brutal Muslim, fears for the safety of the daughter she bears him. A young Hindu woman, grieving a stillborn child and drifting away from her husband, makes a bold move when Muslim raiders board the train they are riding in. A child who survives an attack during Partition violence but hasn't spoken since shows up decades later as the grandfather of a married woman struggling with her own losses. These are not, for the most part, happy stories; they are stories of loss, love, passion, of the struggle against change and the inevitable adjustment to it, and of the perseverance of the human spirit. As one character puts it, the body's will to keep on living overpowers all obstacles. An Unrestored Woman is beautifully written and will take you on an emotional journey that you won't soon forget.

Sublime, harrowing, playful, complex--READ IT!

The book is an excellent read--Rao is a skillful storyteller. Her ability to recreate and convey a mood, a remote setting, a different time pushes the reader to move in greedily, while the richness of her layered language compels the reader to linger. A series of short stories link ingeniously, in the manner almost of Ovid's Metamorphoses. Her book is dealing with, mostly, the complications for various characters implicated in the Hindu/Muslim divide surrounding the partition of India, though she explores the more distant implications for Indian diaspora, a welcome turn. While the book overall acknowledges the atrocities committed by adherents or professors of both faiths against members of the opposite AND their own faiths, I do find that the depictions and treatments of Muslims overall paint them in a worse light--rapists, kidnappers, procurers of child prostitution, pimps to their wives. Yet even within these seeming biases, there is no reductiveness. So, for instance, while a Muslim woman kidnaps a Muslim child and forces her into prostitution, that child years later finds the means to liberate herself and manage to restrain her violence against her oppressor. A Muslim man kidnaps and rapes a Hindu young woman whose village is burned by a Muslim mob. That Hindu woman then kills her own beloved infant child produced by that rape, killing her because the Hindu government workers would force her to abandon her child (deemed officially Muslim by paternity!) in order to be relocated to India. It would make a phenomenal teaching text at the college level.
